Palworld update removes gliding with Pals due to Nintendo lawsuit

In a game update on May 8, 2025, version 0.5.5 was rolled out, making it available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The notable change in this update is that Pals can no longer be used for gliding. Instead, players are now restricted to utilizing regular gliders when moving through the air. Previously gliding-capable Pals will instead provide passive benefits while airborne.

Alongside the update details came an explanation from developer Pocketpair, outlining the rationale for this modification as well as past changes that eliminated Pal Spheres from the game, alongside other tweaks to the mechanics.

As reported by Pocketpair, the necessary adjustments were implemented as a result of Nintendo’s legal action against them, alleging patent violations.

Regarding these contentions, we firmly believe they are unfounded and question the validity of the relevant patents. To prevent any interruption in the progress and delivery of Palworld, we’ve made some concessions.”

“On the issue of these allegations, we strongly disagree with their validity and the patents in question. In an effort to ensure smooth development and distribution of Palworld, we’ve had to make certain accommodations.

In line with widespread assumptions, Pocketpair confirmed that these alterations were indeed a consequence of the ongoing legal proceedings. Speaking about today’s update and patches from the previous year, they expressed their regret that such changes had to be implemented. It’s clear that everyone at Pocketpair shares the disappointment felt by many players due to this adjustment. However, it was recognized that an alternative could have worsened the gameplay experience for players even more, leading to the conclusion that these changes were essential.

Pocketpair recently expressed their heartfelt thanks and admiration for the unwavering support of their fans over the past few months. They regret not being able to provide more updates during this time due to legal proceedings, but they hope their fans can comprehend the challenges in disclosing information freely under such circumstances.

Nintendo’s legal action seeks to halt worldwide distribution of Palworld and demands financial compensation from Pocketpair due to alleged patent infringements. In response, Pocketpair contests the validity of the patents that Nintendo claims they violated. They argue that these patents were either updated or changed after the release of the game.
