In the popular game Genshin Impact, Paimon, the main character’s trusted ally, is well-known for her distinctive appearance and voice. However, it seems that her vocal style might undergo a change in future updates of this open-world RPG. Corina Boettger, who has voiced Paimon since the game’s launch in the English dub, has declared that she will step down from the role until HoYoverse, the game’s developer, signs an agreement with the actors’ union and eventually makes their games union projects.
It seems highly unlikely that HoYoverse will redesign Paimon given their past behavior, as there are multiple factors at play, and a change might not occur anytime soon.
Boettger stated that having a fellow voice actor replaced in their role on the project and HoYoverse’s unwillingness to work with SAG-AFTRA was the deciding factor for her. Furthermore, she mentioned that the compensation for her role remained irregular, although she did not provide any evidence to support this claim.
Previously, HoYoverse relocated Boettger to a new recording facility when it was discovered that she hadn’t received payment from Formosa, who were partners with the developer at the time. Now, Boettger records her Genshin Impact lines at SIDE Los Angeles. It is crucial to remember that voice actors are hired by recording studios, which then work with developers. Payment disputes typically occur between the talent and the studio, although it may appear as if HoYoverse is delaying payment to Boettger directly.
Critics have noted some inconsistencies in Boettger’s storyline. She declared that she was living hand-to-mouth financially and asserted that her payments were delayed for three to five months rather than arriving within the 30 days as per her contract. Since prompt receipt of payment is crucial to her and she has previously managed to resolve a similar issue by disclosing it publicly, it’s puzzling why she chose not to do so this time around.
Boettger allegedly asserted that she informed HoYoverse about her intentions to leave the role of Paimon after John Patneaude’s replacement as Kinich earlier this year. However, she had previously stated publicly that she couldn’t abandon the position due to financial constraints. It’s reasonable to understand this predicament. But if she truly left at that time, why misrepresent it?
Due to inconsistencies in the account, some people now suspect that the situation might have been reversed: Boettger was dismissed and is attempting to reshape public perception about it. At this stage, this assumption is equally speculative as Boettger’s assertions lack verification.
Boettger has consistently expressed support for the SAG-AFTRA strike, yet she continued to perform Paimon while others chose not to work as a show of unity. Critics argue that her harsh remarks towards voice actors replacing strikers, coupled with apparent hypocrisy in the situation, have contributed significantly to the rapid decline in public backing for the strike. This shift has been observed among followers of HoYoverse games, many of whom initially supported the strike but now oppose it, as well as fellow voice actors who condemned such behavior and advocated for the strike’s termination.
Despite Paimon’s significant role in the game Genshin Impact, fans online are almost overjoyed at the prospect of Boettger leaving, as they view him as a source of drama. Additionally, many players have found Paimon’s English voice to be grating for quite some time.
Since HoYoverse typically stays quiet about voice actor changes, we probably won’t hear an official confirmation of a new Paimon voice actor until the Genshin Impact update where it occurs is announced, or if we notice a different voice for Paimon in a trailer, as was the case with Trailblazer’s recast in Honkai: Star Rail. As it stands, we don’t know whether Boettger has stopped recording lines for Paimon or not, so it remains uncertain when, or even if, a voice change might be introduced.
