Overwatch’s most toxic comp lives again in Marvel Rivals

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Marvel Rivals has managed to strike a chord with me like no other game in recent memory. With its whopping 10 million players since launch, it’s clear that NetEase Games has hit the sweet spot.

Marvel Rivals has made a strong debut, attracting over 10 million users since its release on December 6.

Currently, there’s no specific role assignment in Marvel Rivals, including in its new competitive mode. Given its resemblance to Overwatch, it was inevitable that players would experiment with some of the unbalanced team configurations from the past.

In this setup, the team GOATS featured nine players, each specialized as either tanks or supports. They would aggressively advance towards the objective and overpower their opponents. Although it was highly effective, viewers often found it less entertaining. To rekindle excitement in Overwatch esports, Activision introduced a role queue system aimed at enhancing gameplay enjoyment.

Currently, there’s no information available on if NetEase Games will implement a role lock system similar to others. As it stands, the game maintains an intriguing state of imbalance, where characters like Jeff the Land Shark, seemingly out of mythological context, exhibit extraordinary power compared to other heroes such as Norse gods and mutants with omega-level abilities.

But that’s a large part of what makes this game so much fun. It’s the Saints Row to Overwatch’s GTA. It is not taking itself too seriously, and I love it for that. I cannot wait to see what NetEase Games does with the inevitable Deadpool appearance.
