Outriders Studio Faces Tough Times as Layoffs Continue

As a long-time follower of People Can Fly, it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride these past years. From the highs of Outriders to the lows of layoffs and project cancellations, it seems like the studio is constantly navigating the ever-shifting tides of the gaming industry.

People responsible for creating ‘Outriders’, known as People Can Fly, have recently announced another round of job cuts, impacting approximately 120 employees. This move follows the halting of Project Victoria and a scaling back of staff on Project Bifrost. The CEO, Sebastian Wojciechowski, attributed these adjustments to ‘external market pressures’.

Back in January of this year, our company had to let go of over 30 staff members because of tight budgets and shrinking ambitions for Project Gemini, a joint venture with Square Enix. To add to that, Take-Two Interactive decided last September not to publish People Can Fly’s Project Dagger.

In spite of encountering some obstacles, the studio persists in developing multiple unannounced titles, such as the game known as Project Maverick that is being funded by Microsoft and is built around one of their proprietary ideas.

Lately, the gaming sector has encountered substantial difficulties, resulting in more than 14,600 job losses since January this year. To make matters worse, there were about 10,500 layoffs last year. These numbers show that the video game industry can be unpredictable and constantly changing.

People Can Fly is offering aid and guidance to those impacted by the job cuts, and is dedicated to helping the existing team adapt to these transitions. Simultaneously, they are working hard to obtain new contract projects and are planning to create one standalone game that fits within their current fiscal resources.

These advancements emphasize the necessity of flexibility within the gaming industry, where studios need to consistently adapt to market fluctuations to maintain their functionality and keep providing captivating content for gamers.
