Okay, so I’m playing The Outer Worlds 2, and right from the start, this game throws you into some tough decisions. In the very first mission, you’ve got to choose how you want to approach Horizon Point. The thing is, whatever path I pick, my crew goes the other way – we split up and meet back later. I’m gonna break down both options and what happens because of each choice, so you know what you’re getting into.
If you go through Security Ops – Outer Worlds 2
Taking the Security Ops path is a good way to focus on stealth. It unlocks tutorials on sneaking and surprise attacks, and also gives you a knife that can instantly defeat many early-game enemies – if you can stay hidden!
After you overcome this challenge, a large explosion will likely injure or eliminate most of your team. You’ll discover Niles is unconscious, with VAL watching over him, but you’ll have to press on with your mission and unfortunately leave them behind.
Niles will survive, but this way he won’t know exactly what happened when he wakes out.
If you go through Central Dispatch – Outer Worlds 2

Central Dispatch is a fast-paced area where you’ll learn how to use your gadgets in action-packed situations.
Escaping will be much like getting in, except you’ll find Niles conscious, though badly hurt. While VAL treats his injuries, you’ll have a chance to speak with him. He’ll give you his rifle to use for the remainder of the mission, and this interaction will improve his opinion of you. Niles will survive this path as well.
Should you go through Security Ops or Central Dispatch? – Outer Worlds 2
It doesn’t really matter which option you choose, as you’ll gain about the same experience either way. The game’s skill system improves even if you don’t actively use a skill, so it mostly comes down to whether you enjoy stealth or combat more. Choosing Central Dispatch does let you have more conversations with Niles, helping you get to know him better since he’ll be a key companion, but it’s not a big deal if you miss it.
