At the 97th Academy Awards, Anora triumphed with five significant victories, capturing awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Leading Actress (Mickey Madison). Remarkably, this indie romantic comedy is now only the second film to achieve both the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Best Picture award at the Oscars, following in the footsteps of Parasite in 2019.
Anora represents the eighth production directed by Sean Baker, a well-respected name in independent cinema who’s famous for crafting humorous films such as Tangerine and Red Rocket.
Prior to Anora, Oscar was captivated by The Florida Project in 2017, which earned Willem Dafoe a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Eventually, Baker clinched four awards at the 2025 Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.

As a follower who closely watches award shows, Madison’s unexpected victory at the BAFTAs undeniably boosted her chances in the Oscars race. Yet, this triumph sparked an outcry on social media, with users trending “#robbed” for Demi Moore. One user expressed their disappointment poignantly: “I feel sadder for Demi Moore not winning Best Actress than I should. The Academy, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!” They also noted a common observation about the industry: “Best Actor never goes young, but actress is always the fresh, rising star.
A different user humorously commented that, in essence, Moore not winning the Best Actress Oscar over Madison could have been the storyline for the movie titled “The Plot Unfolds.
