Oscar-Nominated Producer Adam Somner Dies at 57

As an ardent admirer of the cinematic world, I find myself utterly devastated by the untimely demise of Adam Somner. His extraordinary career trajectory, marked by over 75 films and collaborations with giants like Spielberg, Anderson, and Scott, has left me awestruck.

Adam Somner, a highly esteemed producer nominated for an Oscar and a popular first assistant director within the movie industry, sadly passed away on November 27 following his fight against anaplastic thyroid cancer. Renowned for his creative partnerships with distinguished directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Ridley Scott, Somner departs behind an exceptional cinematic legacy.

Throughout several decades of his career, Somner was involved in more than 75 movies, short films, and music videos. He frequently worked as the primary assistant director for many prominent Hollywood figures like Spielberg, Anderson, and Scott. His work helped shape timeless films such as Birdman, Gladiator, Lincoln, and There Will Be Blood.

His latest projects feature Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, Steve McQueen’s “Blitz”, and a yet-to-be-titled film by Anderson with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role. Somner received an Oscar nomination for co-producing Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” in 2022, along with Sara Murphy.

The directors who worked alongside Somner offered touching homages. Spielberg described him not just as an assistant, but as a crucial element in his movie-making journey, saying, “He was a unifier… a source of motivation for those venturing into production,” Spielberg stated.

Martin Scorsese acknowledged that without the organizational brilliance and artistic talent of Sidney Lumet, he likely wouldn’t have been able to create “The Wolf of Wall Street” or “Killers of the Flower Moon.

In a similar vein, Paul Thomas Anderson expressed his admiration by referring to Adam as an extraordinary figure, stating that “No one has ever loved filmmaking as much as Adam throughout the entire film industry. He accomplished feats that seemed impossible… It was truly inspiring to observe him at work.

Somner’s talents transcended just managing logistics. He was renowned for establishing a harmonious and productive atmosphere on set, playing a crucial role in coordinating intricate scenes like the notorious airplane orgy scene in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Additionally, Somner’s accomplishments were honored with a Director’s Guild of America Award for The Revenant, as well as recognition through Producer’s Guild and BAFTA nominations for Licorice Pizza.

Adam Somner, whose life was cherished by his wife Carmen Ruiz de Huidobro, children Olivia and Bosco, and brother Mark Somner, left behind an enduring legacy as a visionary director on set and a selfless team player in the film industry. His impact will continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers.
