Oscar Isaac isn’t currently interested in working with Disney again. In a recent interview with GQ, he was asked about potentially returning to Star Wars, and he responded with criticism of the company.
Look, I’m definitely not ruling anything out, but honestly, I’m a little hesitant about working with Disney right now. It’s not just about the Star Wars stuff, it’s about where they’re headed as a company. If they can steer clear of some really problematic stuff, you know, avoid leaning into that whole fascist vibe, then yeah, I’d absolutely be willing to talk about revisiting a galaxy far, far away. Or, honestly, any interesting project, really.
As reported by GQ, the interview happened shortly after Disney and ABC temporarily stopped filming Jimmy Kimmel Live! due to comments Kimmel made about the passing of conservative personality Charlie Kirk. The show began filming again four days later.
Isaac has expressed complicated feelings about returning to Star Wars before. In 2020, shortly after The Rise of Skywalker came out, he told Deadline that the franchise wasn’t quite aligned with his goals as an actor. He prefers working on smaller, more personal projects—what he called “handmade movies”—and collaborating with people he admires.
He also made a lighthearted comment about potentially returning to the franchise, saying he likely wouldn’t do another Star Wars movie—but added with a laugh that you never know, maybe if he needed to buy a new house.
Reflecting on those comments later, Isaac told GQ he probably shouldn’t have been so direct. He explained, “Yeah, that quote didn’t come across well. People ask questions, you answer, and you don’t always think things through. I said something pretty awful.”
I was really struck by Isaac’s comments about Disney and how he suggested they were leaning towards something like fascism, even though he didn’t fully explain what he meant. It’s happening at a time when Disney is getting heat from all sides, politically and publicly. From what I understand, he’s staying away from projects with them for now, but he’s open to revisiting that if things improve at the studio.
