Original STAR WARS Is Coming to IMAX, But Which Version?

To celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027, George Lucas’s original Star Wars film, officially titled A New Hope, will return to cinemas – and now, IMAX screens too! Lucasfilm announced the re-release earlier this year, and recent reports from Polygon reveal IMAX mentioned it during an investor call, alongside plans for films like Avengers: Doomsday and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. This news raises two key questions: how will the film be adapted for the larger IMAX format, and will it be the original 1977 version or one of the 1997 Special Editions?

Many fans are hoping to see the original Star Wars film restored, but it’s likely the IMAX release will be the updated version from 1997 or the later Blu-ray edition. This version has improved special effects that should look great on a large IMAX screen. Plus, it’s the only version most newer fans have ever seen. The bigger concern is how a 50-year-old film, originally shot in a standard widescreen format, will look expanded for IMAX. We’re hoping Lucasfilm doesn’t use artificial intelligence to artificially stretch the film and add extra picture space, but fans should be prepared for that possibility.

We believe Lucasfilm is currently working to restore the original 1977 version of A New Hope. Recent reports from Kotaku showed 4K screenshots of the original film, though they were quickly taken down. This suggests a 4K release of the original trilogy could happen on Disney+ or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray around 2027. For years, George Lucas insisted these original versions remain untouched, but he’s recently indicated he’s moved on from Star Wars and no longer feels ownership over it. This gives Disney the freedom to do as they please, and fans would be thrilled to see the original cuts, including the iconic scene of Han shooting first, even if it’s just for a limited time.
