Oprah Winfrey Recalls How Perimenopause Affected Her; Says ‘For Two Years I…’

As a lifestyle expert and avid follower of Oprah Winfrey‘s journey, I find it incredibly inspiring to see how she openly discusses her personal experiences with perimenopause. Her candidness not only breaks the taboo surrounding menopause but also provides valuable insights for countless women going through similar phases in their lives.

On Oprah Daily, Oprah Winfrey shared her personal experience with perimenopause, detailing the effects on her health and the symptoms she encountered during this time. She reminisced about going through it when she was between 48 and 50 years old on her former television show.

For about two years, Oprah had trouble sleeping soundly; it wasn’t possible for her to have a full night’s rest or find peace. Additionally, she encountered issues with rapid heartbeats.

As I stood before the esteemed medical professionals, my pulse quickened with anticipation. I found myself reminiscing about my recent visit to the cardiologist. In an open confession, the renowned TV host disclosed that she had been taking the prescribed medication and sporting a heart monitor for weeks, a testament to her dedication to health.

On a particular day, as she strolled through The Oprah Winfrey Show’s office complex, she chanced upon Dr. Christiane Northup’s book titled “The Wisdom of Menopause”. Her eyes happened to land on a page with the title ‘Palpitations: Your Heart’s Alarm Bell,’ which Oprah perceived as a significant message.

During that time, Oprah mentioned that neither mainstream media nor her circle of friends openly talked about this specific issue. The only symptom she was aware of during that phase was hot flashes.

On The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah herself revealed that when menopause began for her at age 53, she wasn’t quite ready to grapple with challenges in maintaining focus.

The host expressed that reading, which she really loved to do in her pastime, turned into a “chore.” She added, “Suddenly my attitude toward most things was ‘whatever.’ I wasn’t vibrant. My whole world dulled down a couple of notches.”

Her friend, who was going through a similar lack of energy, shared with her that her doctor had recommended an estrogen supplement. Following this, Oprah too sought advice from her physician and received the same prescription. This treatment proved effective for her. She mentioned that her supplement came in a cream form, which she applies on her arm.
