In 2014, Sony Pictures suffered a major cyberattack. On December 9th, a group calling themselves the Guardians of Peace used malicious software named Shamoon to steal a large amount of data. This resulted in a significant leak of confidential information, including emails and documents.
News reports revealed emails between Sony co-chair Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin that were criticized for racist language. The emails discussed Pascal’s planned meeting with President Barack Obama, and they jokingly suggested asking him about films with African American themes, such as Django Unchained, 12 Years a Slave, The Butler, and Amistad – all of which depict slavery or life before the Civil Rights Movement.
Rudin jokingly suggested someone admired Kevin Hart. Leaked emails also revealed a conflict between Rudin and Angelina Jolie. The messages showed Rudin was angry because Jolie had allegedly tried to convince director David Fincher to abandon the Steve Jobs movie he was working on.
Ultimately, Fincher decided to abandon the project. The plan was to postpone it until Jolie finished directing her debut film, In the Land of Blood and Honey. Producer Scott Rudin then sent a harsh email to Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal, criticizing Jolie as untalented and spoiled for putting the project on hold for a year and a half to pursue her directing ambitions.
Let me tell you, this producer really went off. He made it crystal clear he wouldn’t work with this actress, stating bluntly he has no interest in a project where she has more power than him. He then launched into a tirade about a potential Cleopatra film, essentially saying it’s impossible to make with her involved, citing her ego and the sheer cost. He finished by saying he’s simply not willing to cater to ‘spoiled brats’ and would confront her directly if necessary. It was a pretty scathing assessment, to say the least.
The emails showed Rudin was frustrated with Jolie attempting to control projects. He later clarified that the messages were private, quickly written exchanges between friends and coworkers, and weren’t intended to be overly considerate.
He also said he was profoundly and deeply sorry.
