In the context of anime, “ship” is an abbreviation for “relationship.” It refers to fan-created pairings or romantic associations between characters within a particular series. If you believe that two specific characters would make a good couple, you’re expressing your support for their relationship by saying you “ship” them together. To avoid confusion, it is important to note that this term should not be mistaken for actual ships (boats) as seen in the anime series “One Piece,” where the term may be misleading due to the presence of real boats within the storyline.
Alright, I’m about to share with you a list of the top 15 One Piece romantic pairings predicted by their chances of becoming reality. Although romance isn’t currently central to Oda’s storyline, there could be potential for it down the line. Some of these ships are more likely than others, while some might seem a bit far-fetched, but based on fan theories and what Oda has provided in the series, we believe these are the 15 most plausible ones; some pairs may appear mutually exclusive, but you’ll see why as we go along. Let’s dive in!
15. Sabo and Koala
By the time the Dressrosa arc unfolds, Sabo shares a warm camaraderie with his counterpart, Koala. This friendship leaves Koala deeply distraught when she contemplates Sabo departing from the revolutionaries, taking his memories with him. She weeps at the thought because she is cognizant of his past with Luffy and Ace, as well as his remorse for missing out on the Battle of Marineford, where he couldn’t join them.
The koala felt joyful and showed empathy towards Sabo upon their reunion with his brother, as well as trying to console him over his remorse about not being able to save Ace. This indicates a strong bond between them. Moreover, she was present during his fight at the Corrida Colosseum. However, her feelings towards him are often tinged with anger due to his disregard for responsibilities, such as when she scolded him for provoking war by engaging in a fight with Fujitora, disregarding the Marine’s wrath.
14. Chopper and Milky
In the world I’m part of, I came across a unique character named Milky, a nurse deer-mink residing on our shared island. It was Milky who first sparked any hint of romance in my heart among all the characters. I found myself drawn to her, yearning for her company. Interestingly enough, Milky seems equally smitten by my medical skills, as every other mink on this island does. She’s thankful for my life-saving efforts, but so far, no signs of a romantic relationship have unfolded between us.
13. Vivi and Koza

For over a decade, Koza, the rebel leader, has maintained a close friendship with Vivi. Initially, their relationship was not particularly amicable when they first crossed paths, but their mutual respect grew significantly over time. Vivi’s life was once saved by Koza from multiple kidnappers when she was just a child, a debt of gratitude that she will never forget.
12. Franky and Nico Robin

In my perspective, Robin and Franky share an exceptionally tight bond. Franky stands firmly by Robin’s side, empathizing with her predicament, asserting that her life is no crime according to the World Government. Using the keys our Straw Hat crew managed to acquire during our skirmish with the CP9 agents, Franky graciously freed me from my restraints. We also jointly took down Spandam, as we both harbored a deep-seated dislike for him.
Robin persuaded Franky to join the Straw Hats by giving him a rough tug, which Franky found unpleasant and painful. Interestingly, Robin is the only team member who can provoke a reaction from her, even though she’s generally calm like Zoro, except when interacting with Sanji. However, she gets easily irritated when Franky behaves carelessly during serious situations.
Similar to Nami, her attitude towards Franky’s inventions appears uninterested and even dismissive. A clear sign of annoyance was evident when Franky was inside Chopper’s body, acting in a bizarre and offensive manner. Much like Nami and Usopp, Franky also finds Robin’s tendency to use intimidating facts to predict outcomes somewhat off-putting.
11. Zoro and Tashigi
It seems that Tashigi still harbors resentment towards Roronoa Zoro. Upon learning his true identity, she issues a challenge for a duel. Although Zoro emerges victorious, Tashigi refuses to acknowledge defeat unless he inflicts a genuine wound on her. One of Tashigi’s objectives is to overcome Zoro because she thinks that such a renowned sword should not belong to a lawbreaker; later on, she becomes aware that Zoro also owns Shusui, fueling her curiosity even more. Over time, as she witnesses his incredible skillset, it is evident that Tashigi starts to appreciate his immense power, especially after two years of training under Mihawk.
10. Zoro and Nami

Nami relies on Zoro’s combat abilities and frequently depends on him. However, she is frequently irritated by his habitual laziness, like when he sleeps excessively. In contrast, Zoro, along with the rest of the team, has complete faith in Nami’s navigation skills and promptly follows her instructions. Nami’s cleverness often leads her to exploit Zoro, causing him to be indebted to her constantly. This frequent manipulation often leads to disagreements between them, which more often than not require Sanji’s mediation.
Regardless, they both rank as the most frequent drinkers among the Straw Hat crew. Zoro consistently prioritizes her safety, often intervening (during Skypiea, he fretted about Nami being swallowed whole; on Thriller Bark, he considered if Sanji could rescue Nami while he was in danger himself, a point emphasized by Franky: it was him who saved her from Monet’s attack on Punk Hazard; on Dressrosa, he rushed to save the ship where Nami was staying from Doflamingo; he was the only one who remained with sick Nami when the others fled to observe the island and, moreover, took over her navigator duties so she could rest).
Additionally, it’s evident that Nami tends to him too. This caring behavior is particularly noticeable following the occurrences in the Thriller Bark arc, as she remained by his side alongside Chopper, while the rest of the crew rejoiced.
9. Smoker and Hina

Hina has been friends with Smoker for quite some time, enlisting in the Navy alongside him. She’s often stepped in to save him from being dismissed from the Navy, due to her help in tricky situations. Although the specifics of their relationship aren’t clear yet, many fans speculate about them as a pair. This ship seems plausible considering the contrast in their characters, which is common in shonen anime series. However, it’s worth noting that the lack of information on their relationship remains an issue.
8. Shanks and Makino

In the quaint village of Fuusia, I found myself quite intimate with Makino, who ran the local tavern. When Higuma disrespected me, Makino displayed genuine concern. In response, I vowed to assist her in tidying up the mess left by the mountain bandit. As I helped dry him off, the robber fled. She’s deeply thankful for my role in rescuing Luffy at such a high cost – his hand – and holds me in the highest regard. Despite being a pirate, she recognizes my goodness.
7. Sanji and Viola

On the island of Dressrosa, Sanji encountered a captivating dancer named Viola who led him to believe she was in danger. Being the kind-hearted soul he is, Sanji promptly offered his assistance without a moment’s pause. Later, it emerged that Viola worked under Donquixote Doflamingo, but this knowledge didn’t deter Sanji from thinking she might be a victim of forced servitude. He remained steadfast in his intention to aid her.
Initially, she doesn’t trust him, but later recognizes his honesty based on the power of his Devil Fruit. Subsequently, she turns against her underlings and urgently recommends Sanji to depart from Dressrosa. Leveraging her powers, she reveals their predicament and provides him with a Den Den Mushi for contacting Law and a map leading to the concealed factory where SAD is manufactured.
6. Luffy and Boa Hancock

Luffy somehow formed a bond with the Gorgon Sisters, even though they initially tried to eliminate him because of his observation of the emblem on Boa Hancock, a Shichibukai, which the other two sisters also possess. This symbol that he displayed to the Tenryubito serves as evidence that they were once enslaved, and they prefer death to revealing it to others.
Luffy found friendship with the Gorgon Sisters, despite their initial attempts to eliminate him for noticing a mark on Boa Hancock, a Shichibukai, which the other two sisters also have. This symbol he displayed to the Tenryubito indicates they were once slaves, and they’d rather die than reveal it to anyone.
However, as the battle with the Hancock sisters unfolded, a symbol on Boa Sandersonia’s back began to emerge. In response, Luffy shielded it using his own body, effectively concealing it from others. This selfless act signified his respect for their private matters, asserting that they were unrelated to the ongoing fight. This gesture stirred memories within Hancock, prompting her to spare Luffy’s life.
In time, Hancock chose to evaluate Luffy’s selflessness by sharing her past with him. Moved by compassion, he absolved them of their wrongdoings, believing that the Tenryubito alone were responsible for the atrocities committed. This act of forgiveness not only sealed their friendship but also ignited Hancock’s affection towards him. When Luffy embraced her in response to everything she had done to him in Impel Down and for providing the key to Ace’s Kairoseki handcuffs, her joy was so profound it nearly caused her to lose balance.
Despite being unaware of Hancock’s affection for him, he genuinely cared about her well-being and didn’t disclose how he managed to reach Impel Down, even at the risk of his own life. After a two-year gap, Luffy discovers that Hancock intends to marry him, but it’s uncertain if he comprehends her feelings or views it as a marriage proposal. Regardless, he declines her offer, yet this doesn’t affect their friendship, as he later expresses his hope for another encounter with her.
5. Sanji and Pudding

In response to Big Mom’s scheme to eliminate the Vinsmoke Family, Pudding eagerly consented to pose as Sanji’s bride. When Sanji arrives in Totto Land, Pudding feigns affection and acts as though she desires a blissful union with him, even going so far as to propose forgoing the marriage if it turns out to be a living hell for Sanji.
Nevertheless, Pudding considered Sanji as a mere piece in her game, disregarding the possibility of marrying him. She revealed her true feelings towards Sanji when she dismissed his proposal and ridiculed him by mocking his swollen face (inflicted by his brothers), and later mimicking it, which she believed he would do after witnessing her third eye and discovering her assassination plot.
After that, Pudding labeled Sanji as a strange outcast and a disappointment, even questioning his worthiness to be a prince. However, unaware of his fiancée, Sanji eavesdropped on Puding’s conversation with her sister and was taken aback when he discovered her hidden identity and third eye.
Overwhelmed, Sanji felt his heart shatter when Pudding disclosed their plan to annihilate the Vinsmoke family during the Tea Party. Her taunts and derogatory remarks left him in tears, silently weeping as the rain fell around him.
4. Usopp and Kaya

In my small hometown, I took it upon myself to comfort Kaya following the tragic loss of her parents. To keep her spirits high, I spun intricate tales, transporting her to fantastical realms. Yet, my fabrications turned sour when I attempted to shield her from Kuro’s three-year scheme. She refused to believe me and harbored deep disappointment towards me, even plagued by nightmares. It wasn’t until the truth came to light that she finally understood my intentions.
It’s likely that Kaya was one of the key factors making it difficult for Usopp to let go of the Going Merry, as he had such a deep emotional bond with the ship. Despite the rest of the crew having decided to leave it behind due to its malfunction, Usopp stubbornly refused and severed ties with the Straw Hats just to keep the ship. He even deceived himself into believing that it could still be repaired. At the ship’s funeral, he wept profusely.
3. Sanji and Nami

In many instances, Nami frequently exploits Sanji’s loyalty towards her by delegating tasks to him. Despite this, she often finds his flirtatious behavior disruptive during critical situations. For instance, when Sanji pens a note before hopping aboard the Puffing Tom in Water 7, Nami is irked as the majority of the message consists of romantic jargon, while the crucial details are tucked away in the postscript.
As a passionate film buff, I find myself reflecting on the captivating scene at Enies Lobby, where Kalifa overpowers Sanji. What intrigued me most was Nami’s response to his chivalrous conduct, choosing not to retaliate against women. This act sparked a sense of gratitude within her, prompting her to settle an old score. Furthermore, it appeared that Sanji held himself to a code of honor befitting a gentleman.
However, during the Punk Hazard arc, I was appalled by his inappropriate actions while inhabiting Nami’s body. I couldn’t help but try to restrain him, fearing he might push the boundaries of decency with his perversions.
Among the Straw Hat crew, Sanji is the only one whom Nami affectionately addresses using a honorific title, such as “Sanji-kun.” Interestingly, Nami is the only female character that Sanji refers to using the respectful suffix “-san.” In the Zou arc, Nami was distressed by Sanji’s departure and joined Luffy in their mission to Whole Cake Island to save him.
2. Zoro and Nico Robin

Following the Alabasta Saga, Robin joined the crew, but Zoro remained the sole member who didn’t fully trust her (he proved resistant to both bribes and charms). Yet, as time passed, he demonstrated a readiness to shield her when she found herself in peril. For instance, he rescued her from certain death at Enel’s hands, and was the first to intervene when Aokiji posed a threat to her safety.
During the Water 7 storyline, he remained cautious about trusting her because of rumors she aimed to kill Iceberg. However, upon discovering her selfless intention to give up for the team, he became fully committed to saving her instead. He has always enjoyed combat, but in his battle against Kaku, he admits he can’t continue due to the time constraint imposed on unlocking her handcuffs.
Following the Enies Lobby Arc, Zoro developed full trust in Robin, and they maintained a harmonious relationship. As reported by Usopp, their conversations often carry an icy tone, even when discussing frightening matters. Showing the same level of readiness to sacrifice himself for her as he does for the rest of the team, Zoro has become a reliable partner for Robin. In the Straw Hat crew, both Zoro and Robin are known for their composure and seriousness in any given situation.
In a different phrasing: Among the team members, Robin is the one who doesn’t irritate or anger Zoro unnecessarily due to their shared personalities. While descending to Fish-Man Island, it was Robin who prevented Zoro from leaving the protective bubble, thereby saving him from the lethal pressure. Interestingly, two of Zoro’s most powerful displays – the Asura on Enies Lobby and the 1080-pound cannon on Dressrosa – were triggered by his concern for Robin’s safety.
1. Luffy and Nami

As a film critic, allow me to share my thoughts on the dynamic between Luffy and Nami in this captivating series. While Luffy regards Nami as his captain, he often finds himself on the receiving end of her scolding due to his impulsive actions. Remarkably, Luffy never retaliates angrily, even when Nami skillfully maneuvers him. This flexibility extends to navigation, where Luffy unquestioningly follows Nami’s guidance.
What sets this duo apart is that Luffy, despite being a rubber man, can still sustain damage from Nami’s physical attacks, be it during heated arguments or playful spats. The resilience of Luffy in the face of Nami’s anger or frustration adds an intriguing layer to their relationship, making for compelling viewing.
Initially, only Nami was relied upon by Luffy to safeguard his hat during fights, reflecting both the captain’s and navigator’s faith in her. Despite occasional disagreements stemming from his impulsiveness, she firmly stands by him, viewing him as an immense power source. In the lead-up to the Drum Island arc, when Nami fell sick, Luffy exerted great efforts to aid her, as there was no ship’s doctor available.
He consistently stood by her side, attempting to cheer her up, but felt disheartened whenever his efforts fell short and endeavored to fulfill Genzo’s pledge. During the Drum Kingdom arc, Luffy chose to set aside his ego, opting not to blame the villagers for shooting Vivi. Instead, he humbly begged them to summon a doctor to their vessel for the ailing Nami.
When they learned that the sole remedy for her required physically ascending the Drama Tower, she placed her faith in Luffy to stay secure while he did so. With the added pain from the cold-induced reactions of his rubber body, Luffy scaled an impressive 5,000 meters without shoes, bringing her to a doctor. Even after Nami betrayed him by stealing their ship and treasures during the Baratie incidents, Luffy remained steadfast in his belief that she should join his crew as a navigator.
As I watched their interactions unfold on screen, it struck me how unwavering Trafalgar Law’s trust in Nami was, even among his fellow team members. When Johnny shared that he believed he had witnessed Nami murder Usopp, Law vehemently dismissed this claim to the brink of physical confrontation. Yet, in another instance at Whiskey Peak, when informed about Zoro’s alleged assault on those who deceived them, Law launched an immediate attack without hesitation – a reaction that seemed out of character given the questionable source from which he received the information (in contrast to the trust he placed in Nami).
Despite often overlooking it, Luffy occasionally remains cautious of Nami’s anger. Upon learning that Absalom intended to wed her, Luffy responded casually, “He wants to marry Nami? He’s bold.” Unaware of her past and observing her yelling and weeping with loathing for Arlong, Luffy still extends his hat to console her, and he becomes enraged at Arlong, assaulting him and his crew in retaliation. This is the only individual Luffy has entrusted with his straw hat, similar to how Gol D. Roger had protected it before.
