The live-action adaptation of One Piece on Netflix is undergoing a significant shift since its showrunner, Matt Owens, who worked on Seasons 1 and 2, has chosen to step down.
In a recent Instagram post, Owens announced that he is temporarily leaving the One Piece series due to concerns about his mental well-being. He expressed that the past six years of working on the live-action adaptation have been an incredible experience, but also incredibly demanding. So, he decided to step away from the Going Merry for a while in order to prioritize self-care and address his mental health issues.
Through close collaboration with manga creator Eiichiro Oda, Owen has been instrumental in transforming “One Piece” for Netflix. However, following the completion of production for Season 2, Owen made the choice to move on from the project.
In its initial run, One Piece’s first season enjoyed significant success on Netflix, consistently appearing among the Global Top 10 shows for multiple weeks. This popular anime series made it to the Top 10 list in a staggering 93 nations and claimed the No. 1 spot in an impressive 46 countries upon its debut.
In Season 2, we’re likely to delve into the Alabasta Saga, a beloved storyline from the manga. It seems that this particular tale could extend over several seasons, with Season 3 already being worked on behind the scenes. Despite the departure of Owens, the series is set to carry on as previously planned.
Following Owens’ departure, Joe Tracz, who came aboard as co-showrunner for Season 2, will now take charge of the project. Tracz will manage the post-production phase and make sure that the upcoming season progresses smoothly. According to Deadline, the challenging shooting schedule in South Africa and intricate post-production tasks were key factors leading to Owens’ decision to step down.
Previously, Owens mentioned that One Piece played a crucial role during a tough period in his life. In his own words, “I stumbled upon it at a time when I was really down and out, but I also believe it helped me rise above it.” He shared this sentiment with Deadline in 2023. Eager to share the tale with a fresh audience, he originally intended for a six-season adaptation of the story.
In his Instagram post, Owens hinted at a potential comeback, expressing that he intends to take some time off, engage in therapy, enjoy Marvel Rivals, and recharge, with the expectation of returning invigorated for fresh experiences.
