As a dedicated One Direction fan since their X Factor days, I find myself reminiscing about the quirky and charming Liam Payne, whose untimely passing has left us all heartbroken. From his fear of spoons to his infectious energy on stage, Liam was not just another pop star; he was a unique individual who touched millions of lives.
Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of death.
1 Direction devotees, often referred to as “Directioners”, have been inundating social media platforms with heartfelt tributes following the untimely demise of singer Liam Payne at 31 years old on October 16th. In the wake of this tragic event, the dedicated fanbase has resurfaced various nostalgic and eccentric anecdotes about their beloved former bandmate from One Direction.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it as follows: Looking back at their hilarious dance routines from the “One Way Or Another” music video released for Red Nose Day, a charity event, fans have been reminiscing about fond memories of this band during these challenging times. One such memory is Louis Tomlinson’s phobia of spoons, which has sparked endless conversations within the fandom community.
Back in February 2011, the artist known as Strip That Down singer openly admitted about his unusual fear. In a tweet, he disclosed, “I’ve had a phobia of spoons for around ten years now and I haven’t used one since.” Since then, this peculiarity has been discussed in various interviews and public events, and Payne consistently maintained his statement.
He went as far as to eat soup with a fork on video to prove his point further. In 2015, during an interview with Capital FM, the 1D alum provided better context to his “phobia” of spoons.
He explained, “I’m not really afraid of spoons; I can handle one alright. However, if they aren’t mine, I’d rather not eat with them. It feels a bit odd.” Payne remembered as a child being quite mischievous and often punished by being asked to do chores. He particularly disliked washing the dirty utensils, especially spoons. “It’s just something that’s always stayed with me. I can’t imagine what others might be doing with their spoons. I’d rather not think about it!” he once remarked.
Sadly, Payne passed away tragically when he fell off a hotel’s third floor balcony. The incident caused a skull fracture and internal bleeding. Since the news was announced, tributes have been pouring in from all corners. His former bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan paid touching tributes to their late friend. Payne leaves behind his 18-month-old son Bear, whom he had with Cheryl, a popular member of the group Girls Aloud.
