As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for music and its power to connect families across generations, I find myself deeply saddened by the passing of Cissy Houston. Having grown up admiring her incredible talent and witnessing the profound impact she had on my dear friend and colleague Dionne Warwick, I can only imagine the void her absence will leave in their hearts.
Dionne Warwick is grieving over the death of her aunt, Cissy Houston, who sadly passed away on October 7th at her residence in Newark, New Jersey. At the time of her passing, she was receiving care for Alzheimer’s disease under hospice services. She was a remarkable 91 years old.
Warwick, aged 83, expressed deep sadness following Aunt Cissy’s passing, but found solace and comfort in knowing she passed peacefully and is now in a better place. This was written via X on October 8, a day after the death of the Grammy-winning singer, who happened to be Whitney Houston, Cissy’s daughter.
“I have seen your messages of condolences. On behalf of my family, thank you,” Warwick added.
Initially, Cissy and Warwick honed their singing skills as members of the family gospel group, The Drinkard Singers. This band was overseen by none other than their mother, Lee.
In 2022 conversations, Warwick shared that despite referring to Cissy as “Aunt” during her childhood, she viewed her more like an older sister due to their minimal age difference. She fondly recalled their singing together in the mentioned musical group, saying it was like heaven.
Warwick mentioned that Cissy had an extraordinarily powerful voice, a talent that was also inherited by her daughter, Whitney Houston. Growing up, Whitney was just like any other family member, singing in the church choir, according to Warwick’s recollection. As she put it, “It was all but inevitable. She was meant to sing.
Since the heart-wrenching passing of Whitney in 2012, I, a devoted fan, have eagerly awaited any tribute that honors her legacy. And lo and behold, Cissy released a book in her memory, with my idol, Dionne Warwick, penning the heartfelt foreword. This book is more than just words on a page; it’s a testament to Whitney’s indelible spirit that continues to inspire us all.
To begin the book, the singer painted a picture of her aunt as a robustly caring woman, forever hoping the finest for her kin. In her view, Cissy served as an unending wellspring of motivation, assistance, and guidance for every member within their family.
Later on, Cissy expresses gratitude towards Warwick in the ‘Acknowledgements’ part of the book, acknowledging his consistent support throughout the years.
The news of Cissy’s passing was shared in a statement by her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston. She depicted Cissy as a woman with profound faith and unwavering conviction. Pat expressed her thanks to God for granting their family precious moments with Cissy, during which she imparted valuable life wisdom. As they recall the influence of their mother-in-law in music and entertainment, Pat mentioned that this aspect will forever remain significant within the Houston family’s memories.
