Olivia Rodrigo has criticized the Department of Homeland Security for using her song in a social media post that many found problematic, as it was related to immigration enforcement.
This week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared a video on the White House’s Instagram account encouraging undocumented immigrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily. The video showed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detaining people of color and included the message: “LEAVE NOW and use the CBP Home app to return to your country of origin. If you don’t, you will face the consequences.”
The song chosen for the post’s background music added to the surprise for many viewers. It was Olivia Rodrigo’s energetic track, “All-American Bi,” from her 2023 album, Guts, which played while the agency’s warning was shown.
Rodrigo publicly responded to the post on Instagram, stating, “Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” Her message rapidly gained traction online, with numerous fans and prominent individuals expressing their support.

The video, featuring Olivia Rodrigo’s song, quickly drew criticism online. Many people accused the Department of Homeland Security of misusing the song to make a tough political message seem less severe. Critics felt that combining a popular song about self-discovery and strength with footage of ICE raids was insensitive and inappropriate.
Since her initial statement, Rodrigo hasn’t spoken publicly about the issue, but she made it clear she doesn’t want to be involved with political campaigns that promote hate or fear.
