Olivia Munn is always open about sharing her personal experiences, and she once declined a large sum of money rather than disclose details about a specific event that transpired on a movie set.
Munn discussed this topic with Monica Lewinsky on her Reclaiming podcast. While not delving deeply into the specific event, the actress mentioned that it took place around the beginning of the Time’s Up or #MeToo movement.
The artist opened up about some uncomfortable incidents happening on a movie set that deeply affected her, to such an extent that she felt compelled to submit official complaints to the production company.
Later on, she remembered that the situation escalated to a point where they proposed a substantial sum of money, amounting to seven figures, as an apology, yet this offer came with a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
Munn stated that she preferred not to discuss what happened in that instance, as she wanted to focus on moving forward rather than dwelling on it.
As a passionate devotee, I can’t help but share my experience. I remember vividly when the most illustrious stars confessed their refusal to sign those Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). They asserted that they were compelled to do so, and it felt so “unjust.” In retrospect, it was during the emergence of the #MeToo movement and Time’s Up, a period when anyone who signed an NDA was being criticized as doing so for monetary gain. Indeed, it was a pivotal moment in our society’s struggle against silence and secrecy.
The actress expressed concern that by agreeing to the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), it might invalidate any events that transpired and she feared the studio might misleadingly announce that she had signed the NDA for money, in an effort to suppress her voice.
Munn’s lawyer suggested she ponder over her choice, but Munn was firm in her decision, preferring to express her perspective directly to the opposing legal team. She remembered someone saying that the amount involved was substantial and it would be “unwise” not to accept it.
Munn pondered, “I told him, ‘This sum may seem substantial to you, but it’s a significant amount for me to risk losing my voice.’ We then left, and I recall feeling incredibly proud as we exited.
In response to that event, the actress stated that it was her anger, rather than a lack of other options, that led her to make the decisions she did. She also mentioned that she needed to learn how to control and channel this anger constructively. Notably, she said this while NDAs were no longer valid in California.
She also talked abyed learning to think about things and take some time and speak that out.
