Apart from Romeo and Juliet, Hussey starred alongside Peter Ustinov in Death on the Nile, portrayed Norma Bates in Psycho IV: The Beginning, and took part in the 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It. She also collaborated with Zeffirelli again for the 1977 TV film Jesus of Nazareth, where she played Mary, the mother of Jesus.
2022 saw Hussey and her fellow Romeo and Juliet actor Leonard Whiting file a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures. They alleged that during filming, Zeffirelli recorded them naked without their consent, as both were just 15 and 16 years old at the time. The duo sought $100 million in compensation, attributing this amount to the movie’s massive success, which they estimated to have generated over $500 million in earnings.
In response to the lawsuit, Zeffirelli’s son told The Guardian in January 2023, “It’s awkward to learn that after 55 years since filming, two senior actors – who are mainly recognized due to this movie – are claiming they faced abuse which has caused them long-term anxiety and emotional distress.
The movie garnered four Academy Award nominations and was known for its graphic scenes that sparked intense debate during its release. Amidst the contentiousness, it clinched Oscars for Excellent Cinematography and Outstanding Costume Design. Notably, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting bagged Golden Globe awards for their exceptional performances in the movie.
