On a sunny Friday afternoon, Off-White™ creatively converted the rooftop basketball court at New York’s New Design High School into a vibrant catwalk for its Spring 2026 fashion spectacle titled “Pop Romance.
The venue was adorned with murals, each showcasing the graffiti style unique to one of New York City’s five boroughs, a tribute to Virgil Abloh’s signature style, created by local artists like Daze, Lady Pink, Mast, and CES. The latest designs by contemporary designer Ib Kamara stood out amidst them, with an equally vibrant impact. This season, Kamara’s fashion line embraced the significant influence of Black culture on pop culture, presenting a colorful collection inspired by the 1970s – a time when African creatives made their mark in disco, hip-hop, and streetwear, driven by unwavering determination.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “In my notes, I coined it as ‘creativity as a battle cry,’ an outlet for individuality to endure. This power surging within me is timeless and invigorating. The pieces in this collection echo that very essence, but they aren’t a throwback; instead, they embody the pulse-pounding, undeniable energy that’s uniquely New York City.
The collection primarily featured flairs and silky satins, with sharp tailoring adding a distinctly angular touch to many outfits. Vibrant varsity jackets, a signature style of Off-White™, added an exuberant touch, particularly fitting in the academic environment. A hint of collaboration with New York Liberty was also showcased, subtly displayed on the runway as the team’s mascot, Ellie the Elephant, cheered from the front row.
Kamara stated that by reconnecting to the foundational aspects of urban black culture, there’s a significant progress made, with authentic experiences replacing the dominance of popular music.
