Odessa A’zion Stuns on the Cover of Elle Magazine

Odessa A’zion is featured on the cover of Elle magazine, and the accompanying interview reveals how quickly fame has come for the rising actress.

A recent magazine article by Clover Hope, with photos by Carin Backoff, profiles Odessa A’zion at a particularly hectic time. She was simultaneously filming a movie with Sarah Paulson and Naomi Watts in Montreal and awaiting the Oscar nominations.

She was already receiving praise for her performance in Marty Supreme, a film where she acted alongside Timothée Chalamet and collaborated with director Josh Safdie. The movie was A24’s most successful domestic release and garnered numerous nominations from critics and award organizations.

A’zion confessed she was anxious about the Oscars and initially thought she was to blame when she wasn’t nominated. She recalled how people on set constantly reminded her about the upcoming nominations, saying, “I just wanted them to stop talking about it!” Later, she playfully called her makeup artist a “loser,” only to discover the next day that they had both been nominated for a British Academy Film Award. The news sparked a small celebration among the crew.

I recently sat down with A’zion at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel in Montreal, and she was incredibly down-to-earth. She admitted she’s still processing everything, saying she feels both thankful and a little stunned by how quickly things have changed. She told me, and I quote, “I still feel like I’m pinching myself… ‘Grateful’ is not enough, and ‘honored’ is not enough.” It’s clear she’s genuinely humbled by it all.

The actress is getting more recognition because of her part in the HBO series, I Love LA. While she appreciates the attention, she admits it still makes her anxious. She explained, “It’s unsettling and a little scary, but I’m incredibly thankful and optimistic about what’s next for my career.” She also mentioned that it’s challenging to decline job offers now that she has more opportunities to choose from.

Director Josh Safdie shared that he initially wasn’t sure about casting her, but changed his mind after seeing her audition tape. He explained that it’s hard to get a true sense of someone’s talent over Zoom. He was particularly impressed by the ‘punkish vulnerability’ she brought to the role, which he felt came across authentically on screen.

A’zion is joining the world of Stranger Things with a voice role in the new animated series, Tales From ’85. Despite becoming increasingly well-known, she still gets nervous at events and prefers to pick out her own outfits. She even collaborated with L’Atelier 7474 and Maison Privée to create a unique dress, wanting to experiment with a fresh look.

Acting has always been a big part of her life, likely influenced by her parents, Pamela and Felix Adlon. Before focusing on auditions, she attended Champs Charter High School of the Arts. She landed her first professional role at 16 on the TV show Nashville, and has since appeared in Fam alongside Nina Dobrev, and the series Grand Army. She’s also worked on films like Sitting in Bars with Cake with Yara Shahidi, and Fresh Kills, directed by Jennifer Esposito.

Her success accelerated after working with Rachel Sennott, Jordan Firstman, Josh Hutcherson, and True Whitaker. Firstman described her as “a loose cannon in the best sense of the word… filled with energy.”
