Okay, so this is a bit of a shock, but Odessa A’zion has left the new A24 film, “Deep Cuts.” It’s happening after a lot of people started speaking out about her being cast in a role that was originally written for a woman of color. It seems like the conversation really shifted quickly, and she’s decided to step down because of the criticism.
A’zion quickly responded to criticism on Instagram Wednesday evening about the lack of diversity in a film she was potentially involved with. She directly told her followers, “Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie.” She then emphatically stated, “F–k that. I’m out.”

The criticism started soon after TheWrap announced A’zion would be cast in the upcoming movie based on Holly Brickley’s novel. The character, Zoe Gutierrez, is written as being half-Mexican and half-Jewish, but fans noticed A’zion, whose mother is actress Pamela Adlon, doesn’t share that same background.
Social media users expressed disappointment that the role didn’t go to a Mexican actress, arguing it was a chance for greater representation in an independent film. Many suggested actresses like Melissa Barrera or Eiza Gonzalez would have been a better fit, given the character’s background.
A’zion revealed she initially tried out for the role of Percy, but was then offered the part of Zoe. She later admitted, “I’m really upset I hadn’t read the book and should have considered all sides of Zoe’s character before saying yes.” She went on to say, “Now that I understand the role better, I’ve decided to withdraw.”
The actress expressed gratitude to her fans for calling her out, making it clear she wouldn’t want to take a part that belonged to another performer. She explained that many other actors could play the role far better than she could, and she’s excited to see who ultimately gets the part.
“Deep Cuts” is a love story taking place in the 2000s, following two college students who are passionate about music as they figure out their futures. Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey will star in the film, which will be directed by Sean Durkin and produced by A24.
Even after leaving the project, A’zion is still one of the most talked-about new stars of 2026. She’s currently enjoying success with the film “Marty Supreme,” directed by Josh Safdie, and starring alongside Timothée Chalamet. This role has earned her several award nominations, including one for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming SAG Awards.
Besides her movie roles, A’zion is currently playing Tallulah Stiel in season two of the popular HBO show “I Love LA,” created by Rachel Sennott. She’s also going to be in the new “Stranger Things” spin-off, “Tales from ’85,” which should be released later this year.
Filming for “Deep Cuts” was initially planned to start in February. It’s unclear whether A’zion leaving the project will push back the schedule, as the studio now needs to find someone new to play Zoe Gutierrez.
Eli Bush and Josh Safdie are producing the film, and with a planned release in 2027, the producers will likely prioritize finding a new actor for a key role in the weeks ahead.
