Oblivion Remastered Fans Furious Over Unexpected Visual Downgrades

As a devoted fan of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I must express my disappointment at the unexpected visual downgrade in the recent remastered version compared to the original 2006 release. Back then, Oblivion was exclusively available on the Xbox 360 console, a reminder of how far back in time 2006 seems now. To be fair, the 2025 remaster does boast enhanced visuals compared to the original game. However, during the process of this remastering, some aspects have regressed visually, and I find these downgrades both surprising and hard to comprehend.

I hope that these issues will be addressed in a future patch, but for now, the Oblivion community on Reddit is expressing their discontent with all these visual changes.

On the subreddit dedicated to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, a player noted that the Blackwood and Steel armor sets appear identical, causing confusion. This issue is more significant because it wasn’t present in the original game. The question remains as to why this inconsistency has arisen. In addition, several players have highlighted that not only are the Blackwood armor sets problematic in the remaster, but many of the darker armor sets seem incorrectly reworked, a concern shared by others.

1. The top comment expresses frustration: “It seems like the remaster team isn’t fond of black armor. They’ve either made many sets grey or altered them drastically.”

2. A second comment shares disappointment: “I used to love the old Blackwood armor, especially on Dark Elves. I was disheartened when I saw it had changed.”

3. The third comment questions the decision: “I can’t understand why they couldn’t keep it black. It just seems a bit strange.”

1. A third comment states: “It’s unacceptable, but this is the most amazing version of steel armor!”

2. A fourth comment elaborates: “They dropped some balls on certain aspects.” (Informal)

3. A third comment remarks: “That’s unacceptable, but it’s the best-looking variant of steel armor I’ve seen!”

4. A fourth comment expands: “There are things they really messed up.” (Informal)

Additional observations highlight several visual flaws within the remastered version. For instance, the Dark Brotherhood door appears differently from its original counterpart due to the absence of a red glow. Furthermore, there is no audible voice emanating from this door and additional characters have been incorporated, which alters the established lore significantly.

It seems that during the remastering process, some parts of the game weren’t thoroughly checked for inconsistencies or errors. This is why we see so many inconsistencies in the final product. If everything had been carefully reviewed, these discrepancies wouldn’t have occurred.

Currently, neither Virtuous developer nor Bethesda publisher, nor their parent company Xbox, have responded to these criticisms upon publication. Should there be any updates, we will adjust our story accordingly. The positive aspect is that if they acknowledge the problem and decide to invest time and resources into fixing it, this issue can be resolved with a patch update.
