Nvidia, you see, has been doing quite well. Explosive growth, they call it. Based on this artificial intelligence thing. A market some folks think will be worth more than two trillion dollars. A lot of money. It started with graphics cards, those little chips that make the pictures move. But they branched out. They always branch out. So it goes.
Now they sell everything. Chips, networking tools, software. The whole shebang. Another quarter, another year of big numbers. Profits reaching into the seventies, percent-wise. It’s almost unsettling. Almost.
But there’s this one number. A little warning flag, if you bother to look. And that’s what we’re here for, isn’t it? Looking at the flags.
From Pixels to Predictions
Nvidia’s been around a while, over thirty years. They were good at making pictures move, and they still are. But the game changed. The world decided it needed artificial intelligence. And Nvidia, bless their hearts, decided to provide it. They bet on it before most people knew what it even was. A risky move, certainly. But it paid off. The stock climbed. A thousand three hundred percent over five years. Numbers like that make you wonder if you’re still on Earth.
Ninety-One Percent
Here’s the number. Ninety-one percent. That’s how much of Nvidia’s revenue comes from data centers. From artificial intelligence, specifically. They’ve put almost all their eggs in one basket. Not a smart thing to do, generally speaking. But here we are.
They haven’t completely abandoned the other baskets, mind you. Gaming still exists. So does professional visualization. And there’s talk of cars, robots, even telecom. Other places for the money to go. But the data centers… that’s where the big numbers are. That’s where the future supposedly is.
Artificial intelligence isn’t going to vanish, of course. Even if the spending slows down, someone will still want to predict things. Someone will still want machines to do their thinking for them. It’s human nature, really. To offload the difficult parts.
Nvidia showed they can adapt. They jumped on the AI bandwagon before it was fashionable. And that’s something. A company that can change. A company that can see where the money’s going. So it goes. I wouldn’t worry too much about the dependence on AI. Not today, anyway. There’s still potential. A lot of it, probably. It’s just a number, after all. A very large number. But still, just a number.
