Nvidia is improving its digital characters known as ‘ACE’ (Artificial Conversational Entity), powered by generative AI, to operate independently within video games. At CES 2025, they showcased this evolution with a novel PUBG teammate named ‘PUBG Ally.’ This character will help players by communicating in game-specific language, offering strategic advice, locating items, driving vehicles, and participating in battles.
These characters are controlled by compact language models (CLMs) that mimic human-like reasoning, as well as multi-modal CLMs for visual and auditory understanding. Moreover, Nvidia’s AI companions will also appear in other games such as ‘Naraka: Bladepoint’ and the upcoming ‘inZOI’, providing interactive gameplay experiences and aid to players.
In PUBG, ‘PUBG Ally’ is developed as an interactive character that plays alongside you, comprehending and assisting your game objectives. It communicates using terminology unique to the game, offers instant strategic advice, locates and shares items, navigates vehicles, and engages in battles with other players. This artificial intelligence teammate aims to improve your gaming experience by providing support akin to that of a fellow player.
Nvidia’s ACE technology employs compact language models (SLMs) that function similarly to how humans make decisions at high frequencies. These models empower AI characters to understand their surroundings via visual and auditory signals, enabling them to behave and respond in manners reminiscent of human actions. This innovation is anticipated to lead to more interactive and engaging game environments.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that beyond PUBG, AI characters developed using ACE technology are expanding their horizons into other games too! In March 2025, Naraka: Bladepoint Mobile PC Version will introduce a ‘Local Inference AI Teammate’ feature. Later in the year, the PC version of Naraka: Bladepoint will follow suit. These intelligent companions can join your party, fight by your side, hunt for specific items, adjust their gear when needed, suggest skills to unlock, and strategize moves that will help lead us to victory! Can’t wait!
In the forthcoming life simulation title from Krafton, named ‘inZOI’, there will be AI-powered companions called ‘Smart Zoi’. These virtual buddies are anticipated to boost the gaming experience by offering engaging and adaptable interchanges and assistance within the game environment. Moreover, Nvidia hints that characters from ACE could potentially act as bosses, with intentions of incorporating them into boss fights in Wemade Next’s ‘MIR5’.
These technological advancements could potentially transform how AI interacts within games, but it’s crucial to remember that the presentations by Nvidia are carefully edited, not live. Therefore, we can’t definitively predict how these AI teammates will perform in authentic gaming situations. Regardless, integrating AI-controlled characters is a substantial leap towards creating more captivating and reactive gaming environments.
