It’s not that I want to see stocks falter, it’s just…well, let’s be real, the market has a habit of proving optimists wrong, doesn’t it? Shares are down a good 8.1% as I type, though earlier it was flirting with a near 10% drop. Barclays decided to be the bearer of slightly bad news, and the investors? They blinked. Always the investors.
A Price Target Chopped in Half (No Pressure)
They’ve slashed the price target on NuScale by 67%, from $45 to a mere $15. $15! It’s almost…insulting, isn’t it? Like they’re saying, “Okay, we thought you had potential, but…never mind.” Which, let’s face it, is basically what most of us feel about our life choices by Tuesday. Still, $15 is about 12% above Friday’s closing price of $13.44. Silver linings, I suppose. Though I’m starting to suspect my optimism is just a coping mechanism.
And it’s not just Barclays getting cold feet. Goldman Sachs had a little trim of their own earlier this month, knocking the target down from $23 to $20. It’s like everyone’s collectively deciding that advanced nuclear reactors are…less shiny than they initially thought. Which, honestly, is a reasonable assessment. Complicated, expensive, potentially world-saving…but still. A lot.
Should You Stick With NuScale? (Asking for a Friend)
Look, a steep price target reduction isn’t ideal. But panicking and selling? That’s just letting the analysts win. Though, frankly, sometimes it’s tempting to just admit defeat and go lie down. Anyway, the real story unfolds on Thursday when NuScale reports its fourth-quarter results. That’s when we’ll see if they’ve actually made any progress towards launching commercial operations. If they haven’t? Well, then you have a legitimate reason to reassess. If they have…then we can all pretend we knew it all along.
