‘Sons of Anarchy’ is still remembered as one of the best crime dramas on TV, thanks to its compelling stories and realistic look at motorcycle club life. Over seven seasons, the show built a rich world and featured a strong cast of characters that viewers really connected with. Sadly, some of the talented actors who played those characters have since passed away.
William Lucking

William Lucking, who played the tough and loyal Piermont ‘Piney’ Winston, was a founding member of the motorcycle club at the heart of the show. Despite facing health problems and often needing an oxygen tank, Piney remained a strong advocate for the club’s core principles. Lucking also brought a connection to the show’s past as the father of the popular character, Opie Winston. The actor passed away in 2021 at the age of 80, leaving behind a long and successful career in film and television.
Johnny Lewis

Johnny Lewis became well-known for playing Kip ‘Half-Sack’ Epps in the first two seasons of the show. His character was a hopeful member who went through tough initiation challenges and risky tasks trying to become a full member. Lewis left the series and sadly passed away in 2012 at just 28 years old, an event that received significant media coverage.
Sonny Barger

Sonny Barger stood out in the cast because he was an original member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, Oakland chapter, in real life. He portrayed Lenny ‘The Pimp’ Janowitz, one of the first nine members sent to prison as depicted in the series. This casting brought an authentic connection to the real-life motorcycle club culture the show aimed to represent. Barger died in 2022 at age 83 after fighting cancer.
Alan O’Neill

Alan O’Neill played Hugh in seasons six and seven of the show. His character was involved with the Real IRA and helped the group manage gun distribution in California. Before taking the role in the American drama, O’Neill had already built a successful acting career in the United Kingdom. Sadly, he passed away in 2018 at the age of 47 from a heart condition.
Dimitri Diatchenko

Dimitri Diatchenko was an actor who played a Russian mobster on the show, creating conflict for the main characters. His role was important in establishing the show’s violent setting, particularly in the beginning. Often cast as Russian or Eastern European characters because of his heritage and ability to speak those languages, Diatchenko tragically passed away in 2020 from an accidental overdose.
Dave Legeno

I was really saddened to hear about Dave Legeno’s passing. He was a powerful presence on screen – you could always tell he’d be playing a strong, intimidating character, like his famous role as Fenrir Greyback in ‘Harry Potter’. He brought a real edge to the show, especially during those scenes with the European groups. It was such a shock to learn he died while hiking in Death Valley back in 2014; the heat just got to him. He was a talented actor and will be missed.
Mike Hagerty

Mike Hagerty was a familiar face in television and film, easily recognized by his distinctive Chicago accent and mustache. He often played working-class characters, and many remember him for his role as Mr. Treeger on the popular sitcom ‘Friends’. However, he had a wide-ranging career, including a serious role in the drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’, proving he could do more than just comedy. Sadly, Hagerty passed away in 2022 at the age of 67 after a seizure caused by a bad reaction to medication.
Lee Weaver

Lee Weaver, a seasoned actor with over 60 years of experience in Hollywood, was known for his memorable performances in supporting roles. He brought a special spark to every project, including appearances in shows like ‘Sons of Anarchy’ and ‘The Bill Cosby Show,’ as well as the film ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’. Even with brief appearances, Weaver consistently left a strong impression. He passed away in September 2025 at the age of 95, leaving behind a significant collection of work in both television and film.
Brad William Henke

Brad William Henke had a unique career – he was a former NFL player who became a successful actor. He built a strong acting portfolio, particularly in TV dramas, and often used his impressive physical presence in his roles. Viewers will remember him as a construction foreman on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ and for his compelling portrayal of the tough corrections officer, Desi Piscatella, on ‘Orange Is the New Black’. Sadly, he passed away in his sleep in November 2022 at the age of 56.
