The Waka Waka vocalist consented to a €7.5 million penalty to resolve her tax evasion case in Spain, thereby bypassing the potential risk of an eight-year imprisonment and a €23.8 million fine. The singer had been charged with not paying €14.5 million in taxes from 2012 to 2014, which she consistently refuted.

The renowned vocalist explained that she resolved the dispute while prioritizing her children’s welfare and happiness. “I wanted them to understand that I acted as I did to shield them, stay close to them, and move forward in life. This was not an act born from fear or remorse.”

Based on Page Six reports, the conflict arose because Shakira lived in Spain from 2012 to 2014 for more than six months, according to Spanish law, which mandates tax payment for such residents. However, prosecutors alleged that she was living there during this period, while Shakira insisted that her main residence was elsewhere.

In 2011, Shakira moved to Spain to be with her boyfriend, soccer player Gerard Piqué, but she didn’t live there on a permanent basis. She clarified that she spent just 73 days in Spain that year, significantly less than the 183 days required to be considered a tax resident.

Instead of saying that, she moved to Spain in 2015 and faced charges for taxes dating back 10 years, it might be clearer to rephrase as follows: In 2015, she relocated to Spain, but tax officials attempted to collect taxes from her that were over a decade old.
