NOT JUST A GOOF’s Trailer Unveils the Story Behind A GOOFY MOVIE

30 years since its initial release, “A Goofy Movie” will commemorate its anniversary on April 7, 2025. The movie chronicling Goofy and Max’s journey across America to reconnect resonated strongly with many young Millennials, earning a special place in their hearts. With memorable Powerline tunes and Max’s flirtatious advances towards Roxanne, the film left an indelible mark on its audience. Even today, fans can be seen imitating Powerline’s dance moves at Disney theme parks and on TikTok videos. In honor of this significant milestone, Disney is releasing Not Just a Goof, a documentary delving into the untold story behind “A Goofy Movie”.

The video chronicles the innovative crew, comprising director Kevin Lima among others, who lacked background in direction and leadership roles. Despite this, they aimed to create a film reminiscent of John Hughes’ work, focusing on modern adolescents, yet featuring animated characters.

In those days, this movie stood out from others due to its relatable protagonists, Max and Roxanne. They experienced adolescent crushes, found their parents cringeworthy, and enjoyed listening to their favorite musicians, just like many of us did. To add to the appeal, Tevin Campbell, a popular R&B artist at the time, performed the film’s catchy tunes by Powerline. It’s not hard to imagine that some of us might recognize a bit of our own parental or adult selves as being less ‘cool’ in the eyes of Generation Z and Generation Alpha.

Discovering the real-world influences behind the story and witnessing some of the voice actors recording their lines is quite an experience. Hearing those traditionally animated sequences stirs up nostalgia for the old-school movie-making methods. It feels like a heartwarming tribute to a film that holds immense significance for ’90s Disney fans, including myself! (I’m one of those ’90s Disney kids!)

On April 7, we’ll get our hands on an extensive documentary about “A Goofy Movie” titled “More Than Just a Joke” on Disney+.
