On May 9, 2025, Netflix is planning to debut its worldwide comedy release titled “Nonnas.” This movie, helmed by director Stephen Chbosky (known for Wonder and The Perks of Being a Wallflower), introduces Vince Vaughn in his first role for a Netflix Original production. Susan Sarandon also takes on a significant part in this production.
The film draws its inspiration from the true-life tale of Enoteca Maria, a Staten Island eatery where grandmothers from various cultural backgrounds prepare traditional meals. In September 2024, Netflix secured the movie rights for a sum exceeding USD 20 million.
Starting May 9, 2025, the movie “Nonnas” will be exclusively premiering on Netflix for global streaming. This means viewers across the world can watch it at the same time as its worldwide release. The film runs for approximately 1 hour and 52 minutes, and it carries a TV-14 rating due to mature themes, language, and suggestive content. The official announcement of this release date was made during Netflix’s Next on Netflix event.
In a heartwarming tale, Vince Vaughn assumes the role of Joe Scaravella, a man who, following the loss of his mother, decides to establish an Italian restaurant staffed exclusively by local grandmothers. Susan Sarandon’s character plays a pivotal part in the emotional and community-focused narrative. The star-studded cast includes Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Linda Cardellini, Drea de Matteo, Joe Manganiello, Michael Rispoli, and Campbell Scott.
The movie was made in collaboration by Rachel Shane and Gigi Pritzker from Madison Wells, along with Jack Turner from Matador Content. Additionally, Vince Vaughn, Ameet Shukla, Scott Budnick, Alexis Garcia, Jay Peterson, and Todd Lubin served as executive producers.
In a heartwarming twist, Nonna’s narrative delves into the realms of mourning, recovery, and bonding, all encapsulated within culinary artistry and ancestral customs. Following the loss of his mother, Joe discovers a fresh sense of meaning by launching a restaurant where grandmothers prepare cherished family dishes. This captivating tale is reminiscent of the real-life Enoteca Maria in Staten Island, highlighting the power of cooking to unite us and provide opportunities for redemption.
Despite being depicted as taking place on Staten Island, the movie was actually shot at multiple sites throughout New Jersey during May and June of 2023, including Paterson, Jersey City, and Hoboken. The script was penned by Liz Maccie, a writer recognized for her work on Siren.
