Christopher Nolan says his top movie of 2024 so far is Gladiator 2, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic 2000 film.
Directed by Scott and written by David Scarpa, the movie centers on Lucius, the son of Maximus and Lucilla, who becomes a gladiator and gets caught up in the treacherous power struggles of Rome after his family’s land is seized by corrupt rulers. Paul Mescal plays Lucius, and the cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, and Derek Jacobi.
In a recent interview with Variety, Nolan explained why he chose the sequel as his favorite film of the year. He admired how it combined the heartfelt storytelling of the original Gladiator with the grand scope audiences expect from today’s big-budget movies. Nolan also pointed out director Scott’s talent for using impressive visuals to get viewers to think about why they’re drawn to violence and entertainment.
Nolan explained the film’s over-the-top elements, like sharks in the coliseum, reflect what audiences actually want to see, and that the film cleverly highlights these cultural fixations while still telling a compelling story.
Nolan was also impressed by the movie’s action and visuals. He pointed out that Scott skillfully combines exciting action scenes with a strong narrative and underlying themes. Scott’s use of multiple cameras during action sequences made them both thrilling and purposeful.
Nolan complimented Scott, noting that very few directors manage to seamlessly blend their style into a film on so many different levels. He specifically praised Scott’s skill in using visuals to strengthen the story.
In Gladiator 2, Paul Mescal plays Lucius Verus Aurelius, a soldier captured in war. He’s forced to become a gladiator and fight for Macrinus, an ex-slave who is secretly planning to take down the ruling emperors Caracalla and Geta.
Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi return as their characters from the previous movie. Paul Mescal replaces Spencer Treat Clark in the role of Lucius. The film was made by Scott Free Productions and released by Paramount Pictures.
Talk of a sequel began as early as 2001, but the movie faced numerous setbacks during its long development. Production was put on hold when DreamWorks was acquired by Paramount in 2006, and again in 2023 due to the Hollywood strikes. Filming finally took place from June 2023 to January 2024. Gladiator 2 had its first showing in Sydney on October 30, 2024, and then released in the U.K. on November 15th and the U.S. on November 22nd.
The movie was generally well-received by critics, although most agreed it wasn’t quite as good as the first one. It made $462.2 million around the world and earned nominations for both its cinematic and commercial success, as well as a Best Supporting Actor nod for Denzel Washington at the Golden Globes. It also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design.
