As a die-hard fan of the Alien franchise, I must say I’m both excited and apprehensive about this upcoming series. With over three decades of my life intertwined with these terrifying creatures, I’ve grown to love their intricate lore and the heart-stopping suspense they bring.
Since Disney’s Investor Day event in December 2020, it has been clear that the Alien franchise would be transformed into a streaming series for FX by Disney, with Fargo’s Noah Hawley assigned to develop it. Although details about the show were scarce at first, recent updates have been substantial. As per Deadline, the Alien series has cast Timothy Olyphant in a significant role as Kirsh, a synth character. Furthermore, Hawley recently provided some information about what we can anticipate from the series, titled Alien: Earth, such as its potential release date
When Will Noah Hawley’s Alien TV Series Release?
As a gaming enthusiast excitedly awaiting Noah Hawley’s Alien TV series, I haven’t got an exact launch date yet from FX. But, the enticing official teaser hinted at its arrival in 2024!
Previously, Hawley provided a more detailed schedule for the expected launch of this eagerly awaited series when he spoke with The Wrap
He suggested that they are all eagerly anticipating the upcoming event, which will conclude soon. As of now, the plan is to resume filming in January and continue until February, with potential shooting lasting until July or thereabouts. This would likely mean an air date within the first half of 2025. Hawley also emphasized that they are working diligently to get back into production as soon as possible
Here it is, the Alien series is expected to drop around early 2025. Not much longer now!
We Can Expect More Than One Season of this Alien Series
As a dedicated gamer diving into this exciting new world, I can’t wait for our first adventure together! While we don’t have an exact release date for season one just yet, what I do know is that there are plans for the series to continue beyond a single outing. The mastermind behind it all, Mr. Hawley, has shared his vision with us – he and FX designed this series to return regularly for multiple seasons instead of wrapping up as a limited series. So buckle up, folks! We’re in for a thrilling ride that promises more adventures to come
The Cast of FX’s Alien TV Series
In line with previous reports, Sydney Chandler has been cast in a leading role for Noah Hawley’s upcoming “Alien” TV series, tentatively titled Wendy. Joining Chandler is Alex Lawther from The End of the F*cking World, who will portray the male lead character CJ, a soldier. Additionally, Samuel Blenkin has been announced as another main character, a CEO named Boy Kavalier. Essie Davis and Adarsh Gourav are also part of the series, where they will play Dame Silvia and Slightly respectively
Based on Deadline’s report, Kit Young from Shadow and Bone has joined the cast of FX’s Alien series, playing a character named Tootles. Also joining the cast is Timothy Olyphant, who will portray “Kirsh”, a synth character who serves as a mentor and trainer for Wendy, played by Chandler, who is a hybrid with the mind of a child and the body of an adult. Fargo’s David Rysdahl has signed on to play an undisclosed role, while Moe Bar-El from The Peripheral will take on a significant recurring role in season one of the Alien series. Lastly, Foundation’s Sandra Yi Sencindiver is set to appear as a senior member of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation
In conclusion, Babou Ceesay, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diêm Camille, and Adrian Edmondson are also added to the cast of the show
The Setting, Plot, and Timeline of Noah Hawley’s Alien TV Series
In an interview with Esquire regarding his novel ‘Anthem’, Hawley shared some additional details about the upcoming series, and for Alien franchise enthusiasts, there are intriguing points to consider. Here’s what Hawley revealed about his Alien TV series:
The story unfolds on Earth in the future, where there’s a competition similar to Edison, Westinghouse, and Tesla battling for dominance over electricity. However, it’s uncertain which company will end up monopolizing this technology. In films, we often see the Weyland-Yutani Corporation delving into artificial intelligence. But what if there are other corporations exploring immortality through methods like cyborg enhancements or transhuman downloads? The question then arises: which of these futuristic technologies will prevail? This is a classic science fiction theme: does humanity truly deserve to endure?
Furthermore, as reported by Slash Film, Hawley mentioned that the show was influenced by a particular scene from Alien. He explained, “There’s a point where you realize Ian Holm [playing Ash] is an android, and you think, ‘Ah, this is intriguing now, because this portrays humanity caught between its primitive past and the artificial intelligence future, and they are both threats to us.'”
It’s looking like we were correct earlier on – Weyland-Yutani Corporation, often referred to as “the Company,” may serve as the main antagonists in the new Alien series. However, several aspects remain unclear. For instance, how will this connect with the existing Xenomorph storyline? Since the show is called Alien, not Android, it’s expected that we’ll encounter the Xenomorphs at some point. If they don’t, it could leave many long-time fans feeling let down
The Series’ Plot
In a recent statement, Hawley discussed the aliens featured in the upcoming series. He suggested that the movies typically follow the life cycle of these creatures: egg, slow growth, Facehugger stage (which becomes faster), and finally the adult Xenomorph. He expressed his intention to creatively modify this structure and experiment with it for the series. Although he didn’t elaborate on how the Facehugger life phase would be changed or updated, it’s intriguing that Hawley is considering the Xenomorphs in his plans
Further, Hawley emphasized the contrast between the latest Alien FX series and the films that spawned them, stating, “To be frank, a two-hour movie allows for setup before focusing solely on ‘will they survive?’ But when creating a series, this question becomes unsustainable. Even if 60% of your content is top-tier action-horror television, you’re still left with 40% that revolves around ‘what are we discussing?'”
Finally, Hawley recently shared that his intention was to ignore some of the lore put forth by the later Alien movies. It will be interesting to see how this series comes together.
“A spaceship mysteriously crashes on our planet. A youthful woman named Sydney Chandler, along with a diverse team of military personnel, stumble upon an alarming secret which brings them into contact with Earth’s most significant danger.”
The Series’ Timeline
One question that remains is when does the Alien TV series take place relative to the movies? The movie Prometheus takes place in 2089, followed by Alien: Covenant in 2104. The original Alien occurs exactly a century later, in 2122. Events depicted in Aliens happen 57 years after that, in 2179. Alien Resurrection concludes the story 200 years beyond that. Throughout all these timelines, Weyland-Yutani is present
Fortunately, we have some additional information regarding the series placement within the timeline. Recently, FX Chief John Landgraf disclosed updates about the Alien series at a TCA winter panel for the network
He said, “Alien takes place before Ripley. It’s the first story that takes place in the Alien franchise on Earth. So, it takes place on our planet. Right near the end of this century, we’re in — so 70-odd years from now. Ripley won’t be a part of it or any of the other characters of Alien other than the alien itself.” That’s right folks, no Sigourney Weaver. We’re sad, on the one hand, but excited for more specificity on the other.
To be honest, what we’re hoping for is just a single terrifying chestburster scene in the next installment of the Alien series. Is it asking too much? As of now, there hasn’t been any announced release date
