Nintendo warns of potential Switch 2 supply issues due to high demand

Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, shared a message on social media, expressing concern about potential shortages of the upcoming Switch 2 when it goes on sale. He noted that an astounding 2.2 million requests to purchase the console in Japan alone have been received, which is much more than they had initially anticipated. This overwhelming demand has led to the number of units Nintendo can supply on its release day being surpassed by the number of interested buyers. By April 24, 2025, those who have pre-ordered the console will receive a response – whether it’s good or bad news.

Furukawa expressed his apologies to customers for not being able to process everyone’s requests promptly. He assured them that if their pre-order wasn’t approved on April 24, they wouldn’t need to reapply for the next round. Instead, their applications would be automatically added. This same approach is expected for future waves as well, but it was noted by the president that the company may not be able to respond to all applications, even for the second lottery.

Nintendo is actively working towards increasing production rates, as stated by Furukawa, but it’s important to note that this isn’t an issue that will be resolved quickly. He has assured customers that the company intends to keep producing Switch 2 consoles for a prolonged period, ensuring everyone gets a chance to own one. However, some may need to exercise patience during this process.

Initially, the Japanese corporation claimed they had ample stock to handle the launch of the Switch 2, but it appears this prediction was short-lived, a situation perhaps unexpected only by Nintendo. Given the immense popularity and success of the Switch as one of the greatest gaming consoles ever made, any future model is likely to inherit significant momentum due to its predecessor’s reputation alone.
