Nintendo Wants Discord to Reveal Who Leaked Pokémon ‘Teraleak’ Info

Nintendo has initiated a legal process to uncover the individual responsible for the significant Pokémon data leak, commonly referred to as “Teraleak.” The gaming corporation has petitioned a California court to compel Discord to disclose the identity of the user who disseminated Pokémon game information in October 2024.

The leak disclosed substantial insights about past, present, and upcoming Pokémon games. It was disseminated online by a Discord user identified as “GameFreakOUT.” Apart from revealing game details, this user claimed to possess exclusive access to the underlying code for various Pokémon games.

In the realm of gaming, it’s quite significant that the source code is accessible, as it allows for replication, modification, or comprehension of the game’s creation process.

Based on documents released by Polygon, Nintendo is seeking the court’s permission to issue a subpoena. A subpoena is a legal command that can compel an individual or organization to disclose confidential information. In this instance, Nintendo intends to obtain the leaker’s real name, address, phone number, and email from Discord.

In the legal submission, Nintendo’s attorney, James D. Berkley, stated that the subpoena aimed to reveal the identity of the Discord user known as ‘GameFreakOUT,’ who posted copyright-infringing material. The accompanying court filing included a screenshot from the server where the leak occurred, showing the user distributing a file and saying “enjoy,” which implies they were aware they were sharing something significant.

One detail yet to be clarified is the extent of “GameFreakOUT’s” involvement in acquiring the leaked files. Simultaneously with the leak, Game Freak, the developer of Pokémon, reported that an unauthorized individual had breached their servers. The company has since taken steps to enhance their security measures.

It’s not the first occasion that Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have pursued legal action against individuals sharing game content. For instance, in 2021, two individuals who shared images from the games Pokémon Sword and Shield were penalized with a fine totaling $300,000 due to a court case.

Nintendo is well-known for handling leaks with great caution, ensuring that their projects remain confidential until officially unveiled. Currently, they’re seeking legal assistance to identify and apprehend the individual behind the significant disclosure of information related to Pokémon.
