As someone who grew up playing Nintendo games and still can’t get enough of their magical worlds, the announcement of the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo is nothing short of a dream come true! I remember countless mornings waking up to the sound of my old alarm clock, wishing it was instead the soothing melody of Hyrule or the energetic beats of Mario’s adventures.
In an unexpected move, Nintendo has created an alarm clock! That’s correct. It’s an alarm clock designed to rouse you in the morning. But here’s the Nintendo twist – they’ve turned the least exciting part of your day into a game with the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo.
The latest Alarmo device deviates from typical alarm clocks, offering interactive alarms that adjust based on your movements in bed. Unlike Nintendo’s traditional alarm clock, which only plays game soundtracks for waking people up, the Alarmo integrates music and game sound effects that are intensified by the clock itself.
When launched, five distinct games will provide various sounds: Super Mario Odyssey, Pikmin 4, Ring Fit Adventure, Splatoon 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. For instance, you might hear squirts of ink from Splatoon 3, as if you’re engaged in a battle while moving around in bed. Or the sound of collecting coins in Super Mario Odyssey. Each game mode offers seven unique alarm sounds that Nintendo refers to as “scenes.
Initially, the noises are soothing, but they gradually grow insistent the longer you linger in bed. Once you rise, Alarmo greets you with an upbeat melody to kickstart your morning on a positive note. As for how it determines if you’re in bed or not? That’s a secret!
Instead of needing to physically interact with an alarm clock, Alarmo employs motion sensor technology that senses your movements in bed. This way, you can snooze or silence the alarm just by moving around without actually touching it. The game’s sounds react immediately to these detected motions.
Apart from serving as a wake-up call, Alarmo offers soothing game-style sounds to aid relaxation before sleep too. It tracks your sleep patterns and movements in bed, allowing you to review these records whenever you wish. Moreover, the device features an “hourly chime” that signifies the start of a new hour with a beloved Nintendo character as the signal.
Alarmo can link up to the internet for complimentary updates on its alarms, and it may even introduce additional games down the line. The promotional video suggests this possibility by displaying the covers of both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing.
Starting from early 2025, the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo will hit retail stores for $99.99. But if you’re a member of Nintendo Switch Online in the U.S. and Canada, you can buy it ahead of time on the My Nintendo Store. Additionally, the Alarmo is currently available for purchase at the Nintendo New York store in person.
