The TOMO KOIZUMI x Nike Air Superfly will release on September 20th for $160 USD. It will be available at Dover Street Market Ginza. Colorway and SKU details are yet to be announced.
Nike has teamed up with designer Tomoki Koizumi, founder of the Japanese fashion brand TOMO KOIZUMI, to release a limited edition of the Air Superfly that combines the dynamism of sport with dramatic couture.
The base for this collection is the Air Superfly, a slim-fit sportswear model that was relaunched this spring for lifestyle wear 25 years after its original release as a low-profile racing shoe. Inspired by both Japanese manga and elite female athletes, Koizumi blended elements of art and sport into the Air Superfly, boldly expressing powerful femininity and modern innovation. In the translated statement, Koizumi said of the design, “The Nike Air Superfly is a beautiful canvas for the expression of art and sport. I aimed to combine the design and customizability born from running with evocative materials and colors to create a unique yet wearable style that allows women to express different personalities based on their outfits that day.”
Okay, so these shoes are seriously cool. The logo on the tongue and upper actually *changes* color depending on how the light hits it, which is a really neat effect. And the bottom? It’s got this awesome multicolored base with little green dots – it reminds me of the spikes they used to have back in the 2000s. But the best part is how customizable they are! You can swap out the Swoosh with different styles – I think there’s a multicolor one and a black one with a cool ruffled edge. Plus, they give you a bunch of different laces to choose from, so you can really make the shoe your own. Even the inside has the TOMO KOIZUMI logo, which just shows how much of an art piece these are – it’s like he designed them himself!
To further express his vision for the Air Superfly, Nike and Koizumi also created a campaign featuring the brand’s athletes, three-time Olympic gold medalist and 10-time world champion sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, 2024 Olympic 100m hurdles gold medalist Masai Russell, and up-and-coming Japanese sprinter Arie Aoki. Koizumi had this to say about the selection in the translated statement: “Athletes like Shelly-Anne are redefining what it means to be feminine and stylishly unapologetically, while simultaneously demonstrating their brute strength at the highest level. I’m inspired by how they push the boundaries of their sport while also expressing themselves through fashion, breaking down the barriers between sport and self-expression.”
