Many Elden Ring players are finding the Nightreign Balancers, the final boss of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC (a group of Valkyries called the Weapon-Bequeathed Harmonia), to be a tough challenge. This guide will cover their weaknesses and the best builds and strategies to help you defeat them, as many are struggling with this first major encounter.
What is the Balancers’ weakness in Nightreign?

Balancers are especially vulnerable to Sleep effects, which is shown by the closed eye symbol during Expedition selection. However, this weakness is tricky because Sleep effects aren’t common. There aren’t many relics or spells that cause Sleep, and it’s unusual to find them anywhere in the world. Your best bet is checking the settlement in the Northeast during the Nightreign Great Hollow event – it has a 50% chance of offering Sleep items like Soporific Grease.
Despite what the game suggests, Sleep isn’t very effective. It only briefly stuns the Weapon-Bequeathed Harmonia, and even then, it takes time to work. A much better strategy is to exploit the Balancers’ weakness to strong area-of-effect (AOE) attacks and parries. Parrying and countering deals significant damage, and AOE attacks like the Recluse’s cocktail or Ironeye’s ultimate can damage multiple Valkyries simultaneously. If you’re playing as the Nightreign Undertaker, you can even destroy several Valkyries with a well-aimed ultimate.
Balancers strategy and boss fight guide

The Balancers are a very challenging boss, so you’ll need to be well-prepared. Even experienced players can find this fight tough. Here’s some advice to help you succeed:
- You’ll want to be level 12 at least. Anything less and you’re probably not going to have the durability to survive.
- Sleep weaknesses are overrated, as mentioned above. They aren’t bad, but they don’t provide as much of an advantage as you think.
- Target one Valkyrie at a time. Your focus should be on thinning the numbers – don’t have a bunch of enemies with half their health bars remaining. Focus on individual foes to bring their numbers down as quickly as possible.
- Ironeye and Wylder are both strong choices for characters here. Both have high agility/mobility – important against large groups of enemies – and then also have their own individual advantages. The Wylder can parry many of their attacks, while the Ironeye can hit multiple foes with their Ultimate and target enemies who are floating in the air.

- Look out for the cracks in the ground! When the Valkyries start swooping and leaving glowing cracks in the earth, get away from them immediately, as fast as you can. They do huge damage when they explode, though jumping at the right moment can prevent that damage.
- In phase 2 and 3, the pink-tinted Valkyrie is much more dangerous. This foe gains new attacks, including ranged beams that do serious damage and appear to buff other Balancers.
- KOing the pink Valkyrie stuns all other Balancers temporarily. This is your opportunity to do serious damage before they regain themselves!
- Solo play is NOT advised. It’s always hard to fight large groups of enemies – with seven opponents attacking one player, you might as well give up.

If you win this battle against the Balancers, you’ll be able to start the next part of the DLC – the fight with the Dreglord.
