Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films feature a huge number of different Spider-People. With so many web-slinging heroes across multiple universes, it’s easy to lose track of them all! The new live-action Spider Noir series on Prime Video seemed like it would avoid this issue, as we’ve already seen Nicolas Cage play the character in a movie. Or so we thought. This live-action version isn’t quite the same as the animated one – they come from separate universes.
According to showrunner Oren Uziel, the Spider-Verse is gaining another brooding detective. He told Empire that the upcoming character, Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, is essentially the same person as Spider-Noir, but from a different universe, offering a unique take on the character while still featuring Nicolas Cage’s voice.
The success of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Spider-Verse films gave the show’s creator, Uziel, the freedom to build a story that felt both connected to and separate from those movies. He explains that their introduction of the multiverse concept opened the door to creatively reinterpret elements and make them uniquely their own.

Okay, so this does add another layer to the Spider-Verse – having one actor play two versions of the same character. But honestly, after trying to keep track of so many Peter Parkers, it’s not that much more complicated! What I’m really excited about is how it simplifies things for Spider-Noir. We don’t have to stress about how this version fits into the bigger movie timeline – we can just sit back and enjoy this unique take on Ben Reilly, living his own life in his own universe. It’s a really cool way to approach things, and I’m all for it.
This opens up the possibility of seeing different versions of Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir interact with each other. And honestly, if you’re creating a Spider-Verse, you have to explore fun ideas like that!
