Nicolas Cage had been adamant about avoiding TV work for quite some time, emphasizing his identity as a movie actor. But over the past few years, he’s become more flexible on that point, especially since the boundaries between television and film have become increasingly indistinct. He’ll be seen in the upcoming ‘Spider-Noir’ series on Amazon Prime Video, and according to Deadline reports, he’s also set to join the fifth season of HBO’s series ‘True Detective.’ In this new season, Cage is being considered for the role of Henry Logan, a detective in New York City’s Jamaica Bay area, who is investigating a key case.
For the upcoming Season 5 of “True Detective”, Issa Lopez, who was a writer-showrunner in Season 4, is set to return. Her first season, titled “Night Country“, brought a fresh energy to the acclaimed series following its prolonged break from HBO’s schedule. The last two seasons of “True Detective” saw Academy Award winners in leading roles; Jodie Foster led Season 4, while Mahershala Ali starred in Season 3. Similarly, for Season 5, Nicholas Cage, who is renowned for his Oscar-winning role in “Leaving Las Vegas“, will be taking on a significant part.
Is there a continuity with “Night Country” this year, given that the same showrunner is involved? As you may recall, Issa Lopez set the previous installment of “True Detective” in the freezing six-month night of Alaska. This new season is set in New York, but Lopez previously told the “New York Post” that there will be significant connections between what happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the new characters in the new story. While last year’s installment had connections to the first season, we can expect something similar this time around. Filming for season five of “True Detective” is set to begin in 2026, with a planned release on HBO in 2027.
