Nicola Coughlan is slated to headline the forthcoming season of Channel 4‘s acclaimed anthology series ‘I Am’. The broadcaster has made the announcement that this BAFTA-winning drama, created by Dominic Savage, will be back for its fourth installment with a fresh two-part tale entitled ‘I Am Helen’, featuring Joe Cole as a co-star.
As reported by Variety, actress Coughlan, recognized for her performances in Bridgerton, Derry Girls, and Big Mood, has been added to the impressive lineup of leading women who have starred in the ‘I Am’ series before, which includes notable figures like Kate Winslet, Letitia Wright, Samantha Morton, and Lesley Manville.
What is ‘I Am Helen’ about?
The narrative of “I Am Helen” was collectively crafted by Nicola Coughlan and Dominic Savage, with Savage maintaining his distinctive method of intimately guiding his main actors to mold the storylines.
Coughlan expressed great respect by stating, “It’s a tremendous privilege to work alongside Dominic Savage, a remarkable storyteller, in creating the next ‘I Am’ tale. Dom’s dedication to portraying the female experience comprehensively is truly exceptional. To walk in the footsteps of the gifted women who have collaborated with him on this series leaves me feeling absolutely astounded, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to be part of this exciting adventure.
In a upcoming project, Joe Cole (famous for his roles in Gangs of London and A Small Light) is set to act alongside Coughlan. This production, consisting of two parts, has not disclosed its specific storyline or release date yet, but it’s set to premiere on Channel 4 under the title I Am Helen.
Why ‘I Am Helen’ could be the most powerful chapter yet
Starting from its premiere in 2019, ‘I Am’ has been Channel 4’s most lauded new 10 pm drama series in half a decade, earning praise for its poignant storytelling and emphasis on stories led by women. Kate Winslet’s I Am Ruth bagged two BAFTAs in 2023, while earlier installments such as I Am Nicola (played by Vicky McClure), I Am Kirsty (Samantha Morton), and I Am Maria (Lesley Manville) received rave reviews from critics.
Krishnendu Majumdar and Richard Yee from Me+You Productions expressed their gratitude for the ongoing creative partnership with Dominic Savage, an exceptionally gifted and distinctive filmmaker, and for collaborating with Nicola Coughlan, a talented actress who stands out among her peers.
