Actress Nicola Coughlan, famously recognized from Bridgerton and Derry Girls, isn’t shy about expressing her distinct perspectives. She recently disclosed a sense of ease she experienced while playing a more contemporary role in Doctor Who’s holiday special.
During her conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Coughlan mentioned, “It’s incredibly comfortable to portray a contemporary character.” She went on to say that she donned a casual dress and tights, finding the experience “wonderful”.
Each day, the leading actress confidently stated that she always knew her wardrobe choice upon arriving at the set. She further mentioned with a smile, “It was refreshing to embrace a touch of contemporary style, even amidst my frequent time-traveling adventures.
Prior to becoming part of Doctor Who (with Ncuti Gatwa), Nicola Coughlan confessed she wasn’t very knowledgeable about the show. Yet, it was around the same period when she gained prominence for Derry Girls that she became aware of Gatwa, who had garnered broad recognition through Netflix sensation Sex Education.
Coughlan expressed her longstanding respect for individuals who diligently strive for success, recognizing the challenging nature of their field. She clarified that herself and Gatwa were fully conscious of their fortunate position, being engaged in work they deeply cared about on set.
In a recent interview, the actress mentioned that she loved hanging out with Gatwa backstage, where they’d chat about their roles and personal experiences.
She shared, “I told Russell T Davies, ‘I barely know anything about Doctor Who. I’ll join in, but I feel like a complete beginner.’ However, as I worked with Ncuti, I learned so much about the Doctor on the job. It was quite fascinating to learn it straight from the source.
In the Christmas episode, Coughlan’s character finds themselves face-to-face with Gatwa’s Doctor upon checking into a hotel. However, this isn’t an ordinary hotel; it turns out to be a Time Hotel – a unique, interdimensional locale.
