As a gamer who grew up with a penchant for role-playing games, I find myself deeply amused by Nicola Coughlan‘s predicament. Here we have an actress, known for her captivating performances in shows like ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Derry Girls’, stepping into the TARDIS without so much as a peek at the Doctor Who manual.
Nicola Coughlan, famous for ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Derry Girls’, shares that she can’t disclose many details about her character in the ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special due to a humorous reason. Although no secrecy was requested, she confesses that she found the series plot perplexing as she hadn’t watched ‘Doctor Who’ prior to joining the cast.
Among a small number of individuals, Coughlan was one of those who hadn’t previously seen ‘Doctor Who.’ In the holiday special titled ‘Joy To The World,’ she portrays Joy, a character who encounters the 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, upon checking into a London hotel for some quiet relaxation. However, things don’t go as planned when she ends up embarking on a mission with the Doctor to preserve Christmas celebrations all over at once.
On ‘The Graham Norton Show’, the actress openly disclosed that she had no prior association with the program. She clarified that during her upbringing in Ireland, she hadn’t watched it, which necessitated some investigation following her casting. Even as she delved into the project, she acknowledged that she wasn’t entirely familiar with all the intricacies unfolding on set.
As an enthusiast, let me share that I’m just as clueless about the details because I wasn’t privy to the intricacies even before landing this role. Being raised in Ireland, I missed out on the initial exposure during my childhood. So when offered the part, I found myself diving into Wikipedia – akin to tackling War and Peace, complete with its labyrinthine plot of monsters and time travel, leaving me utterly bewildered!
Even with the challenges, Coughlan found pleasure during her stint on ‘Doctor Who’ and would welcome another opportunity should it arise.
It was a fun experience, and I had a lovely time. If they want me back, I would do it again.
On Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25th, ‘Joy to the World’ will be broadcasted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 5:10 pm. Unlike previous seasons where episodes were available on BBC iPlayer at midnight, this season encourages fans to watch it simultaneously at the same time.
