He received a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder around 2020. This condition can lead to experiencing hallucinations, false beliefs, significant mood changes, and severe depression.
Following his diagnosis, Nick started taking medication that was supposed to manage his health. However, the medication caused him to gain weight, a common side effect. He became concerned about these physical changes and discussed them with his doctors.
Roughly a month before the killings, doctors changed his medication due to worries about his condition. However, according to sources at TMZ, the new medicine didn’t improve things. Instead, Nick’s behavior rapidly worsened. He became erratic, unpredictable, and seemed increasingly disconnected from what was happening around him.
People close to Rob and Michele told TMZ that they had been increasingly concerned about their son’s well-being. They knew something was off, but weren’t sure how to address it. According to sources, doctors didn’t temporarily hospitalize Nick for psychiatric evaluation, which could have provided immediate support during this difficult period.
According to sources, Nick was experiencing a severe mental break around the time his parents were killed. Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death at their Los Angeles home on December 14th. It’s been reported that Nick had a major fight with his parents the night before the tragedy.
Nick was arrested shortly after his parents were found dead and is now charged with their murders. TMZ reports, citing multiple sources, that he’s currently unable to participate in legal proceedings. Though he knows his parents are deceased and that he’s been accused of killing them, he apparently believes his imprisonment is part of a wider conspiracy.
Since being arrested, Nick has a new lawyer. He’s no longer working with Alan Jackson and is now being represented by a public defender named Kimberly Greene. Court dates have been pushed back because of ongoing concerns about Nick’s mental health. His formal charges have been delayed during a recent court hearing.
