Nick Reiner Loses Top Defense Lawyer as Attorney Steps Down from Case

Nick Reiner, whose parents were actor and director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, will now be defended by a public defender. This change happened after his previous lawyer, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case.

During a short court appearance on Wednesday, it was confirmed that Reiner’s court date has been moved to February 23rd. He appeared in court wearing a brown jail uniform.

I was following the case, and in court today, the judge checked with Reiner to make sure he was okay with a change of lawyers. He said yes, he agreed. Now, Kimberly Greene is taking over as his defense attorney. His previous lawyer, Jackson, didn’t really explain why they were stepping down, but they told the judge that with Reiner’s permission, they had to withdraw from the case – they felt like they didn’t have any other option.

Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with the first-degree murder of his parents, Rob and Michele. Police found the couple stabbed to death in their home in Brentwood on December 14th. According to LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi, their bodies were discovered in the master bedroom.

Reiner was arrested near a gas station in downtown Los Angeles the same night. The medical examiner determined that both parents died from multiple stab wounds. Police stated that a knife was believed to be the weapon used in the murders.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that the charges against Reiner include multiple murders committed with a deadly weapon, which could qualify him for the death penalty. However, Hochman also mentioned his office is still deciding if they will seek capital punishment, even though California Governor Gavin Newsom has currently paused all executions.

Mental health could also be playing a role in this situation. While Hochman wouldn’t say if Reiner has a history of mental illness, he confirmed that any related evidence will be shared with the court.

Reiner has battled addiction for many years. He shared in a 2016 interview with People that he first sought treatment at age 15 and has since been to over a dozen rehab facilities, even experiencing homelessness at times in various states. He used his personal struggles as inspiration for the 2016 film Being Charlie, which his father directed.

Nick has shared that he’s been violent when using drugs. In a 2018 podcast interview, he recalled damaging his parents’ guest house while high on cocaine, even punching the TV. He admitted he didn’t fully remember everything that happened. He also revealed he had a heart attack brought on by cocaine use while traveling to rehab.
