As someone who has spent countless hours traversing virtual landscapes and capturing elusive creatures as a dedicated Pokémon Go player since its inception, I must admit, I find this latest development by Niantic absolutely fascinating. The idea that my humble contributions to the game could play a role in revolutionizing AI capabilities for robots and smart glasses, or even potentially military applications, is mind-boggling!
As an enthusiastic fan, I’m thrilled to share that Niantic, the genius minds behind Pokémon Go, are crafting a cutting-edge AI model named the ‘Large Geospatial Model’ (LGM). This innovative creation will be fueled by countless images captured by players like me in Pokémon Go and other Niantic games. The purpose? To revolutionize how computers and robots perceive and engage with our world, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities!
The LGM is an expansion of Niantic’s Image-Based Positioning System, known as VPS. Instead of relying on multiple images, the VPS derives a device’s position and orientation from a single phone image, matching it with a 3D map that has been generated using photos captured by players at different spots.
This data is unique because it’s from a pedestrian’s view and includes places cars can’t reach.
Niantic explains they’ve been utilizing data from numerous Pokemon Go players to construct an AI system capable of navigating the physical world. Their goal is to implement this technology in robots and smart glasses, while some suggest it might potentially be used for more complex purposes, such as military applications. (Credit: @404mediaco)

2022 saw Niantic’s Chief Scientist, Victor Prisacariu, clarify that game data from titles such as Ingress and Pokémon Go was instrumental in creating intricate 3D maps. These maps aren’t just about the physical structure; they also encompass an understanding of what these structures represent, be it the ground, sky, or vegetation like trees.
Back in 2016 when Pokémon Go hit the scene, players weren’t anticipating their gameplay info would fuel high-tech AI initiatives. However, Niantic is now transforming this player information into a cutting-edge AI service. This underscores how gaming data can unexpectedly find applications in innovative fields.
