According to reports, Korean gaming company Nexon is said to be in talks with Blizzard Entertainment regarding the development of a fresh title based on the StarCraft intellectual property and the publication of an upcoming mobile version of Overwatch in South Korea and Japan.
As per a report by Korean news source MTN, multiple Korean game development companies vied for the chance, with Nexon emerging victorious and progressing to the primary phase of discussions. Notably, NCSoft and Netmarble were among Nexon’s chief competitors for this opportunity.
In simpler terms, MTN is confident that the partnership will likely be finalized, as the talks are anticipated to progress smoothly.
It’s no surprise that some of Korea’s largest publishing companies might be interested in collaborating with Blizzard, given the long-standing success of both brands in Korea. For many gamers who are now grown and have more disposable income, StarCraft carries a strong sense of nostalgia.
According to MTN’s report, the type of StarCraft game and its platform have not been specified yet, as they couldn’t determine the nature of the bid made by the company. However, it seems that the forthcoming Overwatch game will be a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) designed for mobile devices.
In an alleged proposal, some of Nexon’s competitors have suggested emphasizing user-created content and modifications, transforming the game into a platform similar to Fortnite. This approach is not entirely novel for Blizzard, as its traditional real-time strategy games such as StarCraft and Warcraft had thriving custom game communities for many years in the past.
After purchasing Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has frequently used the untapped potential of the classic StarCraft brand in their communications, yet up to now, no substantial developments have emerged from this apparent enthusiasm for the franchise.
