Nexon appears to be breaking Steam’s review rules with Blue Archive event

The newly launched gacha game on Steam, named Blue Archive, is a powerhouse in its genre and one of South Korea’s most successful stories. However, it seems that the publisher, Nexon, may have been overly keen to start receiving player reviews on Steam.

On the 3rd of July, 2025, a notice was shared on Blue Archive’s forum (later echoed on social media) about the “Steam Client Launch Festivity with Steam Review Event.” This event lasts until the 11th of July, 2025. During this period, all players will receive five Gift Choice Boxes and five Beautiful Bouquets as rewards if the game manages to garner a minimum of 10,000 user reviews on its Steam platform page.

To qualify for event gifts, simply play Blue Archive via Steam and write a review about it. If we manage to collect enough reviews on our Steam page, you’ll be rewarded with special gifts!

It’s quite usual for developers to ask the community for feedback, which generally seems acceptable. However, Valve explicitly forbids asking for reviews in return for games, downloadable content, money, or other types of compensation.

It seems this event could potentially breach Steam review guidelines, as incentives like “other rewards” are usually not allowed. However, since all players stand to gain from it, there might be a loophole allowing it. Ultimately, whether it’s considered acceptable or not hinges on Valve’s own understanding of their rules.

Even though the event wasn’t publicly announced within the game and no specific request for favorable user reviews was made, which doesn’t violate the other two rules in question, this situation might still be a concern due to Steam’s stringent policies. If Valve chooses to investigate further, it could potentially lead to repercussions for Blue Archive.
