New Twisted Batman Story Will See the Dark Knight Get a ‘Saw’-Like Treatment

As a longtime fan of Batman and a connoisseur of the darker, more twisted corners of comic books, I can confidently say that “Batman: Dark Patterns” has me absolutely hooked! The series’ latest arc, “We Are Wounded,” is a chilling homage to the “Saw” franchise that pushes Batman to his limits in a way we’ve never seen before.

In the 1980s, I found myself deeply engrossed in the comic book world that was undergoing a transformation. It was none other than Batman who dared to take this change to new heights, thanks to Frank Miller’s groundbreaking work “The Dark Knight Returns.” This masterpiece plunged us into a darker, more intricate era of comics, although we must acknowledge the significant contributions of not only Miller but also Alan Moore. Yet, when it comes to making an impact, Batman stands out as the undeniable star on this list.

Absolutely, it transformed the former lighthearted superhero into an influential figure in groundbreaking tales. These stories demonstrated that comics aren’t just for fun, but are also a serious artistic medium that isn’t afraid to test and expand its limits, with every new piece adding to this exploration.

Over time, these events gave rise to some unforgettable and somewhat peculiar tales, and among the latest, Batman will encounter a peril unlike any other. His new adversary is a serial killer whose sinister tactics echo those of the Jigsaw Killer from the Saw series.

The series we are talking about is Batman: Dark Patterns, whose current arc – “We Are Wounded” – will reach its end in the upcoming third issue of the comic book. In it, as you might know, Batman is working the case of a dangerous serial killer known as the Wound Man, whose methods are not unlike those used by John Kramer in the Saw series. And while the World’s Greatest Detective is working the case, this happens:

Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman present an intriguing image implying that Batman has fallen prey to the treacherous Wound Man, leaving his future uncertain. Despite our confidence that Batman will extricate himself from this precarious situation (a play on words), it’s exciting to speculate how Watters and Sherman will unfold this tale. The official teaser summary hints at:

In the shadows now, surrounded by destruction and pain that is synonymous with the tyranny of the Grotesque Master, also known as Wound Man, can Batman manage to put an end to this chaos before the twisted villain inflicts more harm? Don’t forget to catch the finale of We Are Wounded!

Intriguingly similar to the twisted plotlines of “Saw,” I found myself nodding in agreement. Batman, a character I’ve long admired for his ability to navigate intricate and cunning traps set by villains like the Riddler, now faces an entirely novel challenge. The conclusion to this puzzle in Batman: Dark Patterns #3, releasing February 12th, 2025 from DC Comics, has me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the solution!
