A chilling new horror film featuring a menacing clown is set to haunt the cornfields soon, and I can’t wait to watch it unfold! Titled “Clown in a Cornfield,” this thriller will be gracing theater screens shortly, offering a fresh take on slasher movies for all horror enthusiasts. Eli Craig, who directed the hilarious “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil,” is at the helm of this production, ensuring an entertaining blend of terror and humor with a terrifying clown named Frendo as the main character.
In this narrative, we focus on Quinn, brilliantly played by Katie Douglas, along with her father, portrayed by Aaron Abrams. They’ve recently relocated to the struggling town of Kettle Springs. The closure of their local corn syrup factory has left the community divided and simmering with hostility. Then enters Frendo, a menacing, knife-wielding character, vowing to ‘purify’ the town by targeting one resident at a time. This straightforward setup carries the nostalgic slasher film feel that we’re all fond of.
Eli Craig collaborated with writer Carter Blanchard to turn Adam Cesare’s 2020 novel into a movie adaptation. The book was successful enough to win the Bram Stoker Award for Best Young Adult Novel. After that, Cesare continued the story with two sequels – ‘Clown in a Cornfield II: Frendo Lives’ in 2022 and ‘Clown in a Cornfield III: The Church of Frendo’ the following year. With another book coming soon, it seems this clown has longevity in his tales.

In this production, you’ll recognize many well-known actors such as Douglas, Abrams, Carson MacCormac from ‘Shazam!’, Will Sasso of ‘The Three Stooges’, and Kevin Durand, who has appeared in ‘Abigail’. They join together in a small Midwestern town that once represented happy memories for Frendo, but has since transformed into a nightmare. It’s an interesting approach – taking something pure and innocent and turning it into something frightening.
The filming concluded in Winnipeg towards the end of 2023, and now it’s all set to hit the screens. The grand unveiling will take place at South by Southwest on March 10, 2025. Subsequently, the movie will be released in cinemas nationwide across the U.S. on May 9, 2025, courtesy of RLJE Films and Shudder. For those who prefer to watch Frendo’s rampage from the comfort of their couch, it will become available for streaming on Shudder post-theatrical release.
The production team is not lacking in talent either. Known for their work on ‘Smile,’ Temple Hill Entertainment is involved, and industry heavyweights like Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are part of the project. This high-profile backing indicates a strong commitment to making this a notable film. Given that Cesare’s books have been gathering a dedicated fanbase, there’s a likelihood we might see more of Frendo if this one turns out to be successful.
I find ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ to be reminiscent of the ’80s slasher flicks I was raised on, yet it has a modern twist. While killer clowns aren’t novel—Pennywise and Art have had their time in the spotlight—Frendo is offering something unique. If Craig’s previous projects are any indication, this could be an entertaining, chaotic journey that’s worth watching in cinemas next spring.
