New Tool Lets You See Your Game Through Colorblind Eyes!

Ubisoft has taken a significant stride towards enhancing accessibility within gaming. They’ve unveiled a unique tool, named Chroma, designed to aid game developers in visualizing how their games appear to individuals with color blindness.

Now, anyone can access this tool at no cost, as it has been made freely available. Developers can discover it on GitHub and employ it to enhance the accessibility of their video games.

With Chroma, you can instantly overlay filters on your game screen that mimic various forms of color blindness. This feature provides an insight into how the game appears for individuals with different types of color vision deficiency, all while maintaining smooth gameplay performance.

The tool was initially developed by Ubisoft’s Quality Control team in the year 2021. Since then, it has been refined using a technique known as the Color Oracle algorithm, which provides a more precise representation of various forms of colorblindness. This tool, named Chroma, can be used on one or two screens and also allows users to customize the appearance of the filter.

David Tisserand, head of accessibility at Ubisoft, stated: “Over the last few years, Chroma has been an incredibly effective tool for us here at Ubisoft. It enables us to swiftly and thoroughly evaluate the accessibility of our games for colorblind players. Since we view accessibility as a continuous journey rather than a competition, we’re excited to make Chroma available to the entire industry. We encourage everyone to use it, offer feedback, and help shape its future development.

Jawad Shakil, who serves as the Quality Control Product Manager, stated: “Chroma was designed with a specific goal in mind – integrating colorblindness accessibility seamlessly into the creative and testing phases. The team encountered and surmounted numerous obstacles during its construction… they developed a solution that eradicated delays and imprecisions, resulting in an efficient and hassle-free accessibility testing experience. Chroma symbolizes the team’s ingenuity and determination… Making Chroma open-source represents a significant stride forward, enabling everyone to capitalize on this innovation.
