As a huge DC fan, I was really excited to see a new trailer for the upcoming Supergirl movie! It gives us another glimpse at what’s in store for this rebooted universe. Milly Alcock looks fantastic as Kara Zor-El, and it’s set to hit theaters in 2026. It’ll be the second film in this new DC Universe, following the Superman movie planned for 2025. I can’t wait!
The latest preview highlights action-packed scenes, strong emotions, and a fast pace. It establishes that this Supergirl isn’t the cheerful, lighthearted version audiences may be used to. Kara is portrayed as determined and focused, traveling through space with a clear mission. This aligns with what DC Studios has indicated for months: this story will be a more serious and emotionally resonant take on the character than previous versions.

Craig Gillespie directed ‘Supergirl,’ with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, produced the film. While the movie draws inspiration from the comic book ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, it presents a unique take on the story.
The movie follows Kara as she ventures across the galaxy with her dog, Krypto, leaving behind the only stability she’s known. During her travels, she encounters a girl named Ruthye. A traumatic incident then sets Kara on a path of vengeance. This Supergirl is haunted by a lifetime of loss and carries deep emotional scars.
James Gunn has previously explained that this version of Kara is quite different from Superman. He once characterized her as small and energetic, but also having a strong, defiant personality. Both Gunn and director Peter Gillespie have emphasized that Kara should be viewed as an antihero – a flawed character rather than a traditional hero.
The movie stars Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain, Krem, and features Eve Ridley as Ruthye. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham play Kara’s parents, while Jason Momoa appears as Lobo, a tough bounty hunter. David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman, continuing from his upcoming solo movie, and Krypto the dog is also in the film.
The new Supergirl movie has been a long time in the making. Originally, a Supergirl film was planned as part of the previous DC movie universe, and actress Sasha Calle played the character in a cameo appearance in the 2023 film, The Flash. However, when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios in 2022, they rebooted the franchise, and the Supergirl movie was officially announced in early 2023.
The movie Supergirl was filmed in England and Scotland from January to May 2025. It’s scheduled to hit theaters and IMAX on June 26, 2026, as part of the first chapter of the DCU, called Gods and Monsters.
